My son just got finished with his colonoscopy, and is now in the recovery room.

His doctor says that his colon is so healed that if she was diagnosing him today

she'd say he does not have ulcerative colitis! I am so thankful I found SCD. I

know it would have been a different outcome today if he had not been on the diet

for almost 3 years. Thank you to everyone for your expert advice. I so

appreciate it!

That's so great! Do you have any tips for a teenaged boy who's just starting

out? (Not yet 3 months in?) What medications did your son use? Any foods he

found necessary to avoid, even though they were " legal " ?

Thanks,

Liz

Cathy,

That is wonderful news! That gives us all hope that we, too, can

heal on the SCD. Thanks for a bright spot in my day.

There were lots of ups and downs, but I could tell almost immediately

that the diet was helping him. He became a believer quickly too, so

that helped him to keep at it when there were so many temptations.

When we started, I didn't know about the pecanbread stages, so he ate

anything on the legal list. Then later, when he saw that the food

wasn't so bad, we started over with the stages. We were probably 6-8

months into it at that point. I had just started reading this

listserv, and realized some things I thought were legal, weren't

really. So we just started over basically. His goal has always been

that if he goes a full year without a flare, then he can try adding

other foods back in. That has helped him to see that light at the end

of the tunnel. Plus, the bonus of not having to worry about running to

the bathroom in the middle of class has helped!

As we added foods one at a time, I realized that we needed to drip the

yogurt. He reacted to it when it wasn't dripped. Then we kept going

very slowly. He would have flares, sometimes end up back in the

hospital, going on and off prednisone, etc. for the first 2 years on

the diet, so we stayed on stage 2 a long time. Finally went to stage 3

foods maybe a year ago, and stayed there for awhile as he still had

slight flares here and there. I think we finally started stage 4 foods

last summer, which he has relished.

Now after this colonoscopy, we'll probably speed up stage 4 & into 5,

but still keeping it to one food introduced every 4 days. If he's

getting ready for exams or something, we'll probably hold off until the

stress is off. The last slight flare he had was last summer (only

lasted a day or two) so we're thinking next summer we could try

introducing some non-SCD foods and see how that goes. Probably gluten

free items to start. His system is still fragile, so we'll continue

slowly.

As far as medicines, he tried various ones before we found the diet.

He started Remicade infusions as a last resort about a year before SCD.

I never felt that was doing anything for him, but the doctor was wary

of taking him off of it since once you stop taking it, you develop

antibodies to it and can't go back on it. We continued that

reluctantly, until just the last couple months when his doctor decided

to do this colonoscopy to see where he's at, and maybe think about

discontinuing the remicade. He's also on colazal, and takes 4 mg. of

methylprednisilone every other day, because that seemed to help prevent

flare-ups in other patients on remicade. Our goal now is to

discontinue the remicade, and slowly wean off this last bit of

methylprednisilone. I don't know what his doctor will think about

weaning off the colazal, but we'll just take it a little at a time and

watch carefully. She will probably be wary of taking him off the

colazal because the teenage years are such a roller coaster ride of

stresses that can wreak havoc on their systems. But we'll work on that

after we get through with cutting out these other medicines. I

mentioned once again to the doctor that maybe low dose naltrexone could

be our back-up once he's off remicade, if needed. She agreed to look

into it again. I don't think we'll start LDN unless he has some sort

of major relapse, but it's good to have a plan. Oh, and the rowasa

enemas. The last couple years, if he had any blood, he'd do one of

those at bedtime and it would clear it right up. When they were bigger

flares, he had to take it for a month or two. But with the slight

flares, sometimes he'd only take it once and that was it. Those enemas

are really not as bad as they sound. He didn't mind them. And it went

directly to the source without having to take more steroids, so that

was a good thing!

So I guess my advice in all of this is to take small steps, take it

slowly. For teenager favorites -- my son likes the SCD muffins,

brownies and cakes a lot, but I don't make them near as much as I used

to. He eats a lot of the dripped yogurt with honey, legal vanilla, and

cinnamon, fruit smoothies, fresh fruit now that he's stage 4, meat &

steamed vegetables. I get LaCroix sparkling water for him as a treat.

Cheddar cheese sticks. Diet Coke maybe once a week. We try not to eat

too many illegal foods in front of him, but he has gotten used to that.

One time he cheated and ate pizza & cereal and ended up back in the

hospital, so he's mostly over the temptations. (He may have

coincidentally gotten a stomach virus that landed him in the hospital,

but he's convinced it was because of cheating on the diet!)

Good luck!

I'm trying not to jump up and down I'm so thrilled! My son on the

other hand is still lying on the sofa recovering from the colonoscopy,

not feeling so well, and wishing for food he can't have until tomorrow

after he's more recovered from the procedure. It hasn't quite sunk in

with him yet!

Congrats to you! I am feeling terrible and pray for healing. My problem is so much gas. Anyone have a recommendation for getting rid of the gas. I have had it for a few days now and it doesn't seem to matter what I eat.

I would go back to intro diet for a few days and see if that helps.

Then if it does, start stage 1 foods from the pecanbread.com website,

introducing them one at a time every 4 days, to see if you find the

culprit. Jodi, who posts on this list a lot, had to stay on the intro

for a long time, because even stage 1 foods bothered her until she'd

had some time to heal.

You might want to try reposting under a different subject heading so

you'll get to people with more experience with getting rid of gas, who

may not click on this post.

Hope you feel better soon.

Anyone have a recommendation for getting rid of the gas.Have you tried following food combining rules? You could google 'food combining' and a lot of stuff will come up. It helps a lot of people get rid of fermentation in the gut, which causes gas. Peace =)Alyssa 15 yoUC April 2008, dx Sept 2008SCD June 2009 (restarted)No meds!

I agree with giving your gut a rest with intro foods, specifically lots of bone

broth soup, cut down on sugars and starches. It would be my bet that the dried

bananas set you off. Hopefully things will calm down.

Are you keeping a food diary? Sometimes the clues are more subtle that we

realize.
