Hi guys,

Another quick question. Asher got better for a couple days and now has a weird fever. It's like it's only the upper half of his body. He's 102.8 and his chest, arms, face are very hot, while his legs are cool and his feet are positively cold. Is this an autonomic thing or something that occurs in most children but I never paid attention to it in my older (non-mito/metabolic) kid???

Do you do anything special for the fever? I am going to fill an antibiotic prescription that was given to us last week in case Ash didn't get better. He did get better for 3 days and now he's got the fever again. Then again, we were outside more than usual yesterday..

This is what Grace gets when she is too warm. She does have autonomic dysfunction. On our last 80 degree day, she even had prickly heat from being outside. She will get the fever, be pale and have flu like symptoms from the heat. For her cooling her down and giving her alot to drink brings it down, but it usually takes the rest of the day to get her normal. Was he red when outside? She usually gets a very red face, but does not sweat a lot. Best wishes.

Hi Darla,

I don't know whether to be glad someone else has experienced this or not (LOL). Prior to this, the "only" autonomic problems I've seen with him are severe GI dysmotility resulting in need for G-tube, so I was kind of hoping that maybe the hot on top (103 degree fever) freezing on the legs and feet was something maybe sort of 'normal' that I'd just not noticed in my older son. But I will make sure to tell the neurologist about it when I see him. It was just so weird b/c I had told my husband that Asher had a fever and my husband walked into the room and touched Asher's feet and looked at me and said "he can't have a fever, his feet and legs are so cold". And then I told him to touch Asher's head and my husband was shocked at how hot he was.

I have noticed this with Zipporrah and Asenath. It is the strangest thing to feel heat from the upper body and freezing cold on the lower, or even stranger to have a fever and yet feel COLD to the touch. I don't get it but just assume it is the autonomic system failure issue. Asi is usually 94 degrees and Zipporrah is 95-96 degrees usually. Zipporrah also seems to run fevers for no reason quite frequently. I am sure teething is not the issue as she drools quite a bit when she teethes. She got two teeth at 4 months of age so we got an early taste of that. Zipporrah also seems to have extra sweaty feet and hands all the time. They feel wet and cool most of the time Then she scrapes them together, which was real great when she had an IV placed in the ankle! I have asked the doctors if she had a sort of athletes foot and they said it didn't appear to be a problem. But noone has offered a reason as to why her feet sweat so much. Just know you are not alone in this weird symptom. Darla Weird fever - ?autonomic Hi guys,Another quick question. Asher got better for a couple days and now has a weird fever. I just realized that today when I was with Audrey her cheeks were so red I felt her because I thought she might have a fever. Her upper body felt normal but her legs were very cold. She also has many sinus infections. We just thought it was the part of the country we were in. Maybe not.

Audrey was with Dave and I for the evening as Amie and the rest of the family had a party to go to. We enjoy her so much! She was all smiles early in the evening but then she went to sleep and was awakened with a seizure. Amie doesn't even get excited about them anymore because Audrey has many during the day and night. Amie says as long as she doesn't they are not too bad. She amazes me almost as much as Audrey does. They are quite a team, those two.

Prayers to all,

Kathy, grandma to Audrey, 32 mos

> Anne R,

I know that I too have dysautonomia, and I myself will be hot and

sweating from the waste up and my feet and legs will be freezing. I

think it has to do with poor circulation and blood pooling caused by

the dyasutonomia. Just a thought!

and Evan (unspecified mito) have cold, sweaty hands and feet at

times. They both have Raynaud's. With Raynaud's your hands can become

numb (which might be the reason for Asi's hand rubbing).

Any one else have a child diagnosed with Raynaud's?

What are the symptoms?

When the affected fingers and toes are

exposed to cold or sudden temperature change, they go a very

distinctive white or blue colour and become numb. When they are warmed

again, they go bright red and the numbness wears off to be replaced by

painful throbbing. The color change is due to spasm in the small blood

vessels in the skin of the hands and feet. These spasms may also occur

in other areas such as the tip of the tongue and nose, earlobes and

occasionally internal organs.

How is temperature normally regulated?

Our body temperature is controlled by the

amount of heat retained or lost through the skin. This is regulated by

the amount of the blood flowing through the small blood vessels of the

skin. When we are hot, the blood vessels open wider allowing more blood

to flow through the skin. Heat is lost through the skin and we may look

flushed. When we are cold, these same blood vessels allow less blood to

flow through them, so less heat reaches the skin surface. This system

works very well and is controlled by special nerves and the mechanism

is automatically controlled by the brain.*****my note--autonomic

nervous system******

What Causes

Raynaud's?

The mechanisms believed to cause

Raynaud's

phenomenon

include increased sympathetic nervous system activity and increased

finger

or toe involvement reactivity to anything that causes the small veins

to

constrict. These can be cold exposure or can even be caused by

emotional

stress. Hormones, and decreased pressure in the blood vessels also

causes

the fingers and toes to blanch or redden. Many patients with Raynaud's

phenomenon have hyperhidrosis (sweaty palms).

Diagnosis

Temperatures of the digits can be

measured as

low as 90 degress Farenheit. Noninvasive vascular tests that are

occasionally

used to evaluate patients with Raynaud's disease include digital pulse

volume recordings and measurement of digital systolic blood pressure

and

digital blood flow.

Hi Anne,

My boys display symptoms like this too. Must be a mito/autonomic

thing because they did not do it until the day the became symptomatic

with mito. Their cheeks get really red and splotchy, the sides of

their heads get warm, their arms get clammy, and their legs become

mottled, their feet cold and sweaty. They do this on a daily basis,

and usually always before a bowel movement. They also become a bit

goofy when they are like this (I think they are dizzy). We have not

been able to keep shoes are socks on their feet since they became

symtomatic.

They usually don't run fevers unless they are sick--when they do we

go for fluids because fever with our boys means crisis (these boys

have a VERY low tolerance for stress).
