Hi, everyone. Today marks the second week that I have been on the SCD.It's been

downright remarkable up until today. I think I know the reason, but I need to

hear some expert opinions.

I made my first batch of yogurt Thursday night and had my first taste yesterday

morning. I was so excited as I have missed yogurt terribly for the last couple

of weeks. First of all, I could barely eat it because it tastes so sour. But, I

added honey and had a bowl in the morning and last night. This morning I have

the loosest bowels I've had in the last week! Is that normal? Did I not let it

ferment long enough? I did let it go for 24 hours. Is longer sometimes

preferable? Or, have I just tried this too soon? Let me know what you think.

Feeling very depressed right now and it would help to know that I just did

something wrong and not that the whole thing isn't really working for me. Thanks

- Kate

Hi Kate,

Sorry you’re not feeling well.

I find that dripping the yogurt makes it taste less sour. It is

recommended to start slowly with the yogurt, like 1 tsp to see how you react to

it. If you do not react, then slowly increase your intake to 2 tsp/day and so

on. There is good info on the Beginner’s Diet at www.breakingtheviviouscycle.info

You may have eaten too much too soon. I had the same reaction to too much

yogurt in the beginning myself.

I always add an hour or two longer to the fermentation process

because I cool the (cow’s) milk to room temp. before adding the starter. Elaine

G. wrote that 29 hours fermentation is ok, but that 30 hours or longer it

starts to kill the good bacteria. That info I found at Yoghurt FAQ in the

Beginner’s Guide.

Congrats on 2 weeks!!!!

It's most probably die-off. The yogurt is high in probiotics and you ate a whole

lot at once. I could only tolerate about 1/2 a teaspoon and worked up from

there. So much yogurt at once would cause a lot of die off. Whatever symptoms

you had are worse when you have die off so you could be doing great for 3 months

then get symptoms again all the sudden. Those bugs don't like the way you're

eating and they're trying everything in their power to get you to eat the way

you did.

I have depression when I have die off too. Flares always caused me depression

before. There is a strong gut/brain connection. There is a book that I haven't

read yet about it. It's on my list. I always let my yogurt go 26 - 29 hours just

to make sure.

Misty, thanks so much. That really helps. Next time I'll control myself and

won't be such a yogurt hog! It's actually thrilling to think I just took out a

big part of the attacking army. -Kate

Me too Misty- If the GI tract is off, so are my emotions. It is scary, but I

remind myself- this shall pass, and so far, on SCD-- it does :)
