Guest guest
I use the urine glucose dipsticks everyday at the end of my TPN to check my sugars. This is Cleveland's protocol. I've never gotten any positive reading from them. Well today I was tapering down on my TPN and had about 30 mins left and I used a dipstick like usual and it turned the deepest color of brown. I have a Freestyle glucometer now because I've been experiencing too low of sugars when I come off the TPN and thats why the tapering was increased to 2 hrs. Well the blood glucose registered 221. We called my TPN team and NS and let them know. Any ideas what would cause this drastic change? I took it again an hour off the TPN and it was still slightly high but better at 115. I've been instructed to check it before I start the TPN, mid day, while tapering and an hour after for the next couple of days to look for a pattern. The other concern is that my labs are looking worse since going on TPN then they did before and I'm having worsening symptoms and minimal to no weight gain even with increasing calories and protein. Spoke with Dr. Cohen my mito doc. today as he is the one who originally wanted me to try TPN. He didn't have my labs in front of him so he is going to get back to us after he reviews those.
