Guest guest
As many of you know, I am in the Richmond program and hoping for surgery in October. As as we all know, Richmond is not a fan of protein shakes, but based on all the information I have gathered both here and through other sources, I truly believe that protein shakes are a necessity. So for the Fremont and SSF post-ops, how soon after surgery can I start using them? Thanks, Barbara (LTLJSMOM)

Guest guest
I asked Beth the nutritionist at Richmond for some study on why the shakes weren't beneficial. She said that the program hasn't been around long enough to supply that info. SO it is also saying there is no info saying it ISN'T a good idea....they just opt to not recommend them. I asked her about putting protien powder on food as a suppliment and she said that was fine to do if I wanted to go to the trouble. SO I ask, what the heck is the difference? Dr. Baggs was still against that even. He is sticking to the belief that you get enough of your nutrients from your food. He has been doing these lap prodecures for awhile, but I haven't asked him yet if he has some study to prove that the shakes are not okay. Dr. Fisher though said that they aren't a good idea because the people doing them start to get bored and add more things to them as time goes on, and before you know it you can consume a 400 calorie shake. I haven't done them yet. I have decided to try adding powder to my meals. I already add in flax seed meal, so what is one more thing? lol Good luck! Guest guest
Thanks Kay, I can see how people can want to add to them, but I think if I add to them, I would make them a meal replacement and not a supplement. But as it stands I dont think I can do too much of it. I've already had 2 meals and 1 shake and I am positively stuffed and I am pre-op!!! Guest guest
As soon as the surgeon has his back turned! Oops, seriously here, basically as soon as you get home. They aren't considered a clear liquid, but a regular liquid. As soon as you're cleared for soups without chunks, or yogurt, go for it! I do recommend making half or quarter size shakes when you first get home, since they should be consumed within half an hour. Guest guest
Well, when I started doing them, I was mixing with milk and fruit, but no more. If I get bored, I add a sugarfree syrup or sugarfree sauce (my favorite is a caramel by Torani). I know people also add sugarfree Jello powder. With the zillion flavors available, boredom with the flavors is not a problem. My standard (90% of my shakes) is chocolate Stack, water, ice, instant coffee (decaf except first shake of day). Be careful adding the flax seed meal. There has been a fair amount of discussion on a couple of the other boards I'm on. The concern is that the fiber might interfere with the absorbtion of the protein. Just a heads up there. specialkmix2000 wrote: >Dr. Fisher though said that they aren't a good idea because the people >doing them start to get bored and add more things to them as time goes >on, and before you know it you can consume a 400 calorie shake. >I haven't done them yet.
