Guest guest
Hello - I have dysbiosis causing some IBS, but mostly nervous/mental symptoms. I have been on the SCD diet for 4 weeks, and began taking VSL3 probiotic two weeks ago. It contains Bifido bacteria and the 'book' says you shouldn't take this, but why? I had a stools test a few years ago and it reported that I had NO growth of bifido bacteria at all - so surely it makes sense for me take this? Now that Elaine Gottshall has passed away, has anybody taken on her mantle - is there another expert? Thanks for any help
Guest guest
Hi .. This is an interesting question one I have been asking this myself from the get go.. The more I have read the more q's I have. From the SCD perspective Bifidus is illegal as it tends to overgrow in diseased guts. http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/beginners_guide/yoghurt/yog_starters.htm http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/knowledge_base/kb/bifidus.htm I have had many stool tests done. I have no detectable amount of bifidum in my system too and yet I am healing really well. Granted I have a myriad of health issues so it's a bit slower for me but it's going well. I like to keep in mind that many many people have healed on this wonderful diet following what Elaine delineated for us.. Yeah, there are many questions.. but the proof is in the SCD legal pudding so to speak.. Jodi > > Hello - I have dysbiosis causing some IBS, but mostly nervous/mental symptoms. Guest guest
yes, I would like to know if someone is continuing Elaine's good work? , I remember trying the VSL3 a couple of years ago - I'm in Australia and its very expensive here and as I recall it had 8 or so different good bacteria's - it just gave me trouble. My doctor didn't put me on it but when I told her about it, she said it could be any of the bacteria in there that I just don't tolerate - so after 14 years of Crohns I've learned to stay off all probiotics until they can be sure what is best - otherwise one just feels like a guineapig. Just a thought for you. Bibi > > Hello - I have dysbiosis causing some IBS, but mostly nervous/mental symptoms. I have been on the SCD diet for 4 weeks, and began taking VSL3 probiotic two weeks ago. There are other people who are doing work based on SCD, but all of them have their own takes on it. Elaine's reasoning for using a single probiotic -- acidophilus -- was because it had been well-studied and did not generally cause issues. (Some very sensitive people find they can only tolerate probiotics in fermented foods, and even then, they must start slowly.) She later added the s. boulardii, a friendly yeast. I know that people feel that there are all kinds of different strains which we must have (because they are the newest, niftiest thing on the market, and expensive to boot!) but I sometimes wonder. I am a student of the history of medicine. In the days before the discovery of antisepsis, it was known that an injury would stop bleeding, scab over, and then develop oozing pus. This would get worse before it got better... if it got better. In fact, pus in an injury -- even just a minor cut -- was so common, the pus (read: infection) was called " healing pus, " and if a wound actually began to heal on its own, the doctors recommended taking pus from someone else's wound and putting it on the clean wound to help healing! Elaine said that bifidus tended to overgrow. I have to wonder, sometimes, if the abundance of bifidus in so-called " normal " guts might not be an example of " healing pus. " I have no scientific data to back this up, but I wonder, considering just how sick I've been the couple of times I have ingested bifidus by accident. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
Guest guest
Thank you all for your replies - I am in a state of some confusion. I'm not sure if I should be eating dairy or not, taking probiotics or not, or which ones etc etc.....so many questions. I have been on the VSL3 for 2 weeks and I think it makes me feel generally worse, but then that's supposed to be a good thing isn't it - the gut rejigging itself? Do we know if Elaine allowed the Saccharmydes Boulardi (I havne't a clue how to spell it!!) > >It contains Bifido bacteria and the 'book' says > >you shouldn't take this, but why? Guest guest
VSL is not legal on SCD. I'd say, initially, until you straighten yourself out a bit, better to just start with acidophilus for the moment. You should definitely be taking probiotics - whether through yogurt (unless you know you have a problem with dairy), some kind of sauerkraut juice or sauerkraut or acidophilus capsules. > Thank you all for your replies - I am in a state of some confusion. > I'm not sure if I should be eating dairy or not, taking probiotics > or not, or which ones etc etc.....so many questions.
