Guest guest
Just curious how many people on here are pre-op? And how many are post-orientation & on their 1200-calorie diet? I'm finding it really hard to keep to my diet. The options that they give you to choose from are really limited in my opinion...but I figure it's for the best...so I just keep trucking along. I am allowing myself one day a week to go " off " my diet to keep my sanity. I'm not going overboard with that tho...still watching what kind of food...but I'm just not counting calories that day. I could really use some meal advice or just moral support I guess. Hanging in there..
Guest guest
Hey , I do not post often, but keep up with everything on a daily basis. I am pre -op with my surgery date of Sept 12. YES!!! I am doing the 1200 cal diet and actually find I am getting full on it. It does seem to be a tad limited, as I am trying to get as much protein as I can. I know it will be difficult post op to get enough protein and am trying to get into the right habits now, rather than later. I have found a great tool to help me keep track of my protein/carb/fat counts. Go to dietorganizer.com. It has helped me tremendously. I think the list given in our binders is more of a guideline. You can experiment with other foods as long as it is in the same group (ei. protein, carb, fats etc.) You will get the hang of it. Keep on truck'n. You will do fine. This board is a great source of strength. Cherinocturnalgroove wrote: Just curious how many people on here are pre-op? Guest guest
Hey , I am pre-op and waiting on my surgical consult the beginning of next month. I am doing ok with my 1200 calorie diet although I am not really keeping to the one "recommended" in the binder. I have been varying it based on my timeframe and what I like as to not drive myself crazy, but staying under the magic 1200 number. Hope that helps some! Guest guest
That 1200 calorie diet was killer for me. I hated it (and thus didn't do it). I did a modified Atkins. Lots and lots of protein (and protein drinks) and very little carbs. Worked for me. I know several on the board did Atkins or something similar. I tried that darn 1200 calorie plan...just wasn't working for me. Keep plugging along and you'll get there. Just keep your eye on the prize! I'm 3 months post-op tomorrow and down 60 pounds since surgery day and 96 total since orientation. Tina > Just curious how many people on here are pre-op? Guest guest
Hello - Yes, I'm pre-op - I had my orientation (weigh in) on July 5th and am scheduled for my initial meeting with Dr. Baggs in Richmond on Sept. 1st. I'm sure the pre-op 1200 calorie meal plan is nutritionally sound, but it does not work for me. What is working for me is to religiously log every bit of food I eat using Fitday(https://wwws.fitday.com/ ). I'm trying to consume minimum carbs. and more lean protein while staying under 1200 cals.. I am also either walking or doing resistance training at target heart rate for 1-1.5 hours per day. I think a heart rate monitor is a sound investment. My 10% is 39lbs. I've lost 32. I have eaten so many freakin chicken breasts, I anticipate either sprouting feathers or starting to cluck. Don't know whether you enjoy cooking, but spices and condiments can be your friend…Shmear a little Dijon mustard on a breast before baking or dry sautéing it.. Splash some Old bay seasoning on that chunk of Salmon. Sheesh, I cringe when I look at the Kaiser sample meals. " Trucking along " is the right mindspace. One foot after another. I try to use the success of one day, to motivate me on the next. You can do this…. Cheers, H > Just curious how many people on here are pre-op? Guest guest
Thats awesome Tina...How long did it take you to drop the 36 pounds? I have to lose 44 to get to my goal to get a date. I was thinking about doing the Atkins thing again myself...instead of this one. > That 1200 calorie diet was killer for me. I hated it (and thus didn't > do it). I did a modified Atkins. Guest guest
Hi: I am post orientation (August 2) and am trying to lose my 10%...I actually am doing the South Beach Diet and am not following the 1200 calorie diet they provided....I have found it to be much better and have lost 20lbs in almost 4 weeks....I have also heard that people do the Atkins diet too....Maybe you should look into one of these...Lots of lean meat, vegetables and different green salads... just not many carbs... It is difficult to lose the weight, but I do drink a lot of water, crystal lite and still once a day, a diet coke to keep me going...Plus, I do go to Mcs once a week, but only order a Egg McMuffin (do not eat the muffin, but I could) and decaf coffee...that way I feel like I am still getting a treat.... Hang in there....I am determined to make this goal and I know you can too....So are you in Richmond? I am.... Guest guest
Officially, my orientation was October 21st. I weighed in a 330 lbs. When I had my surgeon consult on December 28th (after a couple of deaths in the family), I was only down 6 pounds. After that, I tried to get my butt in gear. Got pneumonia, dropped 10 pounds quickly. I really didn't get serious until the beginning of April and I lost it by May 9th. I know some people lose all of their weight in a couple of months. I was a procrastinator, until I finally decided I needed this surgery and only I could do it. I had my official weigh-in at goal on May 9th. I met with the case manager on Thursday, May 19th. I had surgery the next Tuesday. It was a wild ride! So glad I finally decided to get over myself and get the 10% off so I could get to the other side. So, through all of that rambling, what I'm trying to say is ... don't follow what I did...just DO IT so you can get on to the good stuff! Tina > > That 1200 calorie diet was killer for me. Guest guest
Neener neener, TOLDYA! Oh, pre-op, I lost the weight sorta using their 1200 calorie suggestion, except dumping almost all the carbs. There was a fair amount of bread and fruit, and by losing that, I was eating more like 700-800 calories. Guest guest
Hi ..There are days when I say I am going to splurge and when it comes right down to it my splurging is 1400 calories but I make sure I drink alot of water and stick with very low fat food. I am truly afraid if I have something high cal or fattening I won't go back to eating healthy. so many times I did that and said I will go back to dieting tomorrow. Then I don't..Many many years of doing that.I consider my problem like a addiction, so I haven't splurged to the extreme.I know this isn't what you were looking for but I know if I am able to do this I am going to live a lot longer than my mom and dad.Maybe they are my inspiration..Best of luck .. Guest guest
, I'm no authority on any subject here, but what's working for me is mostly portion control and cutting down on and out certain types of food like bread, pasta, potatoes, sugars and just anything that even looks too fattening. I eat a lot of salads, fruits, vegetables and meat in small amounts. I feel as though I get a lot of diversity in my meals. I am eating about 1/3 or less of what I used to eat and I am walking A LOT more than I ever did too. Once I looked at the 1200 calorie diet, I knew I wouldn't be able to stay on it, so I just do my own thing. I'm losing and slowly starting to cut out the things I won't be able to have post-op. I had a diet coke tonight for the first time in at least a week. About 90% of what I drink is water or crystal light and 10% milk or juice (mostly milk [2%]). Do what you gotta do , but just keep being a LOSER. Ron Anyone pre-op??? Just curious how many people on here are pre-op? Guest guest
Screwing up, Pam...well, we're human. We do that. The thing that makes all of the difference is getting away from the black and white mentality. Either I'm good, or I'm awful. You know, you do one thing that is off plan, and you think, "What the hell?" and then go on a bender. The art is in learning to look at the one deviation for what it is: a human frailty, a moment of weakness, of moment of unconsciousness...and then you forgive yourself, remind yourself of your goals...and you throw away the tempting food, or you do something really positive. Like quickly drink down a bunch of water. Or make a salad. Or take a walk, even if it's a quick one. Or get down on the floor and try and do a few sit ups. Or write, and think about what triggered your need to go off plan...and think and write about what you'll do differently next time. It used to be that falling off the plan meant the whole day was shot. Or the week. Or heck, the diet (if I was trying a new diet, for example.) Gradually, I employed some of these techniques I'm talking about, and after awhile, the errant behaviour could be reduced to the one act: the two extra crackers that weren't part of the plan. Last night, in the midst of feeling sorry for myself due to the cramps and the weight gain, etc...I ate some tortilla chips (I ordered Mexican food from Chevy's...and had Waiters on Wheels deliver. One of the bad/good things about living in the City.) Was able to eat like two bites of a chile relleno, and then was full. But they sent over these bags of tortilla chips. I took the left overs, and wound up throwing them out in the garbage chute, because the meal was a poor choice, and I didn't want to pick at it anymore. but, an errant little bag of chips managed to escape without being thrown away. ANd so I ate chips and salsa today in the midst of my little bout of depression. I stopped myself after about 10 went down the gullet. I got ahold of myself, and outside to the garbage chute I went. And then I thought about my stupid depression, I wrote those messages on the board...I went out and had a massage...I drank a bunch of water today...and I came home and did 30 minutes on my Treadclimber. And then, to avoid my usual past behaviour of completely starving myself (also not good, because it puts you into this cycle of eating crap and then never getting any real nutrition into you)...I made myself a protein drink. So, we'll see if I have even more water weight gain (or even calorie driven gain) tomorrow. But, I realized that I failed to eat earlier in the day, which made me vulnerable to eating crap. Plus, I ordered the wrong food, and that was dumb. Plus, I neglected to take a protein source out of the freezer, so I failed to plan ahead. When you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Not again. Not again. So...the point is...we all screw up. The key to winning the war is to come up with a better battle plan for next time...stop the carnage...and run for cover. Protect yourself. Regroup. Do something nice for yourself...and get back in the game. Robynn Pamela wrote: OMG!! , you just sang my song!! Guest guest
I have to start this by saying how awesome all of you are. Just the support and the encouragement found here...makes this place so valuable to me and many others. I just went to the Health Ed. dept. at my local Kaiser & weighed myself. After less than a month I'm down 14 pounds!!!!!! The 1200 calorie diet is working...but like I said before...I'm so bored with it. I may still switch to Atkins...but I dunno...I mean...if it's working...I guess I can keep doing this... Anyways...Hope everyone's day is going well!!!! Guest guest
Yeah...I kinda worry about that... I wonder if the scale was off? If this puts anything into perspective....I found this caloric intake thingy on a website...I think it was for the mayo clinic... but it says that someone my weight & height...and someone that exercies for less than an hour a day...would need to eat at least 3800 calories a day in order to maintain weight. So being on the 1200 calorie diet...which is 1/3 of what the mayo clinic says to maintain....would only mean weight loss... I also know that that 14 pds isn't official since I " m not weighing in at Richmond. Blessings, > > > , > WTG 14 lbs is alot to lose in such a short period of time.
