Darla,

Hi, my daughter -Kay also has cyclic vomiting. Her episodes of vomiting would appear approx every 10/12 weeks and last for 4 days. During this time she would vomit up to 47 times and end up vomiting blood.

Any stress on the body would set off the vomiting especially a viral infection or exposure to a very cold wind.

You mention the vomiting that Asenath experiences may be due to asthma, is this because of the extra mucus during the episodes of vomiting?

.

We are having an issue with Asenath vomiting one time a day, almost every day for the past few weeks. We think it is related to her asthma as the phlegm in the vomit is large. I called Dr. Whiteman as we were concerned what was causing it and he felt it probably was this or perhaps an ulcer beginning from all the steroid use. We haven't noticed any blood in the vomit thus far so not too worried about that quite yet. At first we thought it might be just intolerance to all the liquid meds she takes in the morning, but that just didn't make sense because she used to have three cans of Pediasure per night and now only 1-2 cans. She has tolerated the meds for well over a year without problems. We discussed cyclic vomiting, but wouldn't she vomit more times per day? The reason we think asthma is most likely the culprit is because since the whooping cough she has had coughing episodes ever since. The pulmonologist is thinking it is too far away from the whooping cough to be causing this much problem but wonders if it caused a worsening of her asthma symptoms. Every time she plays or walks around she begins to cough. Our biggest problem with this is the steroid issue. We are decreasing the steroids now every 3 weeks and are due to go down again next Monday, but the pulmonologist wants to "temporarily" increase them by double or even triple to stop this asthma attack. Not sure how good for Asenath that would be so I am having one doc call the other to discuss it further. I hate the idea of increasing the steroid, but hate her vomiting daily too. She isn't eating as well either and has a sour substance through the burp tube. Please pray the docs will come to a good solution that will help Asenath. She is up to 43 lbs now and was only 23 lbs. a year ago. :( Way too much water weight! I hate steroids!!! Each week she gains a little more, so I really don't want to add to the steroid amount, but want her to stop having asthma too. Darla,

> We discussed cyclic vomiting, but wouldn't she vomit more times per day?

For what it's worth, when Emilie was going through cyclic vomiting (which

thankfully has not happened in a long time), she usually only vomited one

time a day--at most three. She would do it at the same time every day

for a week or so, then not for weeks, then start again at the same time

of day--but a different time than the last streak. I doubted cyclic

vomiting at first because I read a lot of comments from parents on the

cyclic vomiting list, and Emilie's didn't sound severe enough (never

needed hydration because she didn't vomit for hours like most). But I

came to realize that it is very individual, and Emilie just had her own

patterns.

Hope you figure it out soon--no fun!

Welcome to the group. We are still uncertain as to what is going on with Asenath but know she is not doing well lately. Thankfully she hasn't vomited for the past two days so I hope she doesn't start it again. Whether it is cyclic vomiting or asthma related, I wish we didn't have to deal with it. Please tell us about your family and Mito child/children. Thank you for giving me your story concerning the vomiting.
