Barbara, he should qualify for extended school year due to loss of what has been learned. They use extended school year just for that purpose if a child is unable to retain what they have learned and will lose it during school break than they need to stay in school, your local school special ed dept should know about it, it can also be listed in the iep.

Looking for suggestions, I'm finding my son really doesn't fit in any

category and trying to find the best placement for him. Most

programs i am finding are either geared to severely physically

handicapped childern who are also mentally challenged or learning

disabled due to emotional or behavioral problems. He basically has

missed alot of school due to hospitalizations and has suffered a

stroke, cognitively he has it all but due to the stroke he has lost

some basic concepts and he was right handed and the stroke affected

his right side so he has to learn to write with his left hand. He is

nine going on ten and will be in the fifth grade. i also worry about

his social skills, lack of being with other children (having to stay

home due to his illness or being in hospitals) so I have to worry

about his social skills as well. Just wondering if anybody has

suggestions I know he needs something but can't find it and the child

study team is no help, they don't want to have to pay for anything so

they are not coming up with any suggestions. Thanks for any ideas.
