Guest guest
Ahhh this afternoon was frustrating, we had the second meeting for hailee, she is starting kindergarten next year and we just met to go over all her test results. I am feeling a little frustrated. She has been labeles Severly Retarded with Other Health Impared. She will be in a self contained classroom with 5 other kids and 2 aids. Her test scores came back ranging low of 18months to 32 months, mainly avaging at 24 months. Hailee will be 6 soon, this was frustrating, I knew this, but having 2 teachers, a special ed teacher, the school pscy, pt, ot, speech and her special ed preschool teacher in a meeting at the same time and them all agreeing was very hard on me, i am taking this hard. This year for school she has attended 51 days of school, she has been out 56 days of the year due to hospitilization. not real sure of this, feeling a little alone as we get closer to this. Today she is hot, very flushed and having panting spells when she breaths, its been a long week and Hailee
Guest guest
I know it is hard and can be overwhelming to be in a room of professionals. Think that you do agree with the diagnoses. If not you have rights. But look at it this way, Hailee needs these so they can provide educational services at her cognitive level and provide any health care needed. Hugs to you and these are normal feeling. I know alot of people that have to jump through hoops just to get the one on one needed. Guest guest
Sorry to hear your frustrations. I know how those tests can be. I remember at Gracies last speech evaluation they have her placed at an emerging 6-9 months (she will be 2 in two weeks). I do realize that she does have a serious speech delay, but not at even at the level of a 6 month old, this confuzed me. I did not understand this, because she does have a few words and I don't know of many 6 month old babies that can talk. They told me that to go to the next level they must display all the requirements of that age bracket. Obviously some of the requirements were impossible to her, because she has oral muscle problems therefore there was no way she could have meet those requirements. Yet, she did meet some of the goals for her age just not enough. I am just telling you this, not to look too closely at there terms. They are just for there classification reasons, not necessarily that your child is actually act that age. Her class does sound good, having only a couple of kids and two teachers. I am sure she will love kindergarten. (Don't they grow up so fast.) Best wishes.
Guest guest
, It is so hard to hear these things...it makes it so real to us.Even when we know things, to hear someone else say it, it takes aways our hope a little. But it sounds like this could be good for her. Alot more attention then she would get being " mainstreamed " . My daughter has to recieve services at home d/t her immuno/white cell issues. I too am worried how this will affect her development(social and educational). You are not alone, this you should remember. We are all here going through it with you. Do you have family that you can take with you to these meetings? Or a friend who also has a child with special needs? Maybe having someone there who is on your side or who can relate could help you when it is over. Someone who can share it with you. Being a single parent, I feel so alone too sometimes. Like it is all up to me to make it right. Quite a load to carry. Dawn
Guest guest
Hi : I know each school district in each state is different. Leah tested out at anywhere from I believe 18 months to 36 months. Her therapists stated that she would have tested higher but because of how the tests are written they would have to stop all testing if Leah couldn't go a step further in how it was described for her to continue. They felt some of it was being tired and just getting mixed up with how it was read to her. Anyway, though, Leah will be continuing in an integrated classroom for her kindergarten year. We were allowed the luxury of choosing between two different schools. I know I am happy for her to be in this classroom, but also a little nervous in going from a contained classroom size of 9 kids to about 24 kids. She will have two teachers in the room and they have an aide. So will see how it really goes. But I am worried about illness and try to really explain to the teachers we need to be very cautious with illness around Leah. But in first grade she will not be so integrated. Than she will be put in a much smaller class size. I dislike the word mentally retarded. Her therapists and teachers used the wording cognitively delayed. And I will admit she is very delayed. But it sounds so much better than retarded. We choose for Leah to focus on the social aspect rather than the indepth learning her abc's and such. Even though she surprises me with knowing colors and even a few numbers. Don't know if that is from all the reading we do because she does watch ALOT of tv. It is always harder to feel it is you against the world. Those IEP's can be intimidating even though they aren't meant to be. But as I said in our last IEP, it was me and my husband and about 10 other people all discussing Leah. May be Hailee can have some time with the other children in kindgarten with music or things like that. Think about what you want for Hailee. Because of the health issues and how much time she missed school, may be they felt this was the safest situation for you all. Which is good. But to not say she is cognitively delayed is not in the best interest of everyone. Need to use different terminology. Let us know if anything changes with her IEP. You still have so many days that you can change things on the report.
