Guest guest
Hello group! Does anyone know about a new gastric bypass center they are opening within the Cleveland Clinic? Do they perform the switch there? My boyfriend is considering having his surgery THERE instead of Dr Hess! Needless to say I am angst with worry regarding this new establishment. I know Cleveland Clinic is one of the best facilities in the country, however, Dr. Hess is the best in this field. My boyfriend is 6'7 " with a BMI of 57. Because of his naturally lovable size, I have been very thorough in my reasearch and was EXTREMELY comfortable when we went to see Dr. Hess. The Dr. excitedly told us my boyfriend would be the tallest person he has switched to date and he had made provisions for this years ago and finally had a patient to utilize these accomodations. He happily called the hospital (wood county) boasting of his newest patient and we left feeling very good about the whole thing. Well, since my boyfriend lives in Cleveland and now there is this new clinic opening, he feels he should have the surgery locally instead of traveling to Dr. Hess. Any suggestions I can give to him regarding pros to the duodenal switch with Dr. Hess as opposed to being one of the first 100 or so to have this surgery in the new facility (albeit " state of the art " ) Cleveland Clinic? Thanks in advance for any advice, especially from Joe!

The biggest plus to Dr. Hess would be his experience and dedication to this procedure. Also his mortality rate is really low (last I knew 3 in all the patients he has done). He has his system for providing this procedure very well developed. The draw backs are that he does not participate as a provider with any insurance (but the hospital does). So he will always be "out of network" if that is an issue for you. Dawn Dr. Hess 4.27.00 267 to 165 size 22 to size
Guest guest
: There is very little new under the sun. Of course someone did the first Gastric Bypass and someone did the first RNY and DS. But there were a lot more failed " first " surgeries than successful ones. The odds are huge that the Cleveland Clinic is doing the RNY though even the mini-gastric bypass is possible. FIND OUT! Then research the difference between the possible outcomes of whatever surgery they are doing and the DS as well as the lifestyle differences. In my opinion the FIRST consideration would be the type of surgery to be performed. Next would be the surgeon who was going to perform it. Yes, generally speaking, more experience is better than less. Finally would probably come the facility where it was being done, the amenities and convenience. There are other considerations but again, the type of surgery to be done would be absolutely my first consideration. You don't need treatment for athlete's foot if you have a hangnail. You might want to print this out and share it with your boyfriend.
