Guest guest
Hi folks! I had an ileostomy in April after multiple surgeries to resect Crohn's in the Sigmoid Colon. I had been on the diet years ago after first being diagnosed with Crohn's, so decided it was the best thing to do for myself. The second day of SCD I started presenting with weakness, chest pains, and shortness of breath. Went to the hospital and was put through a battery of tests with no diagnoses. My doctor questions whether the lack of carbs and minimized absorption due to the ileostomy lead to these symptoms (ex. low blood sugar causing my blood pressure to drop). Has anyone had an experience like this? Thanks!

Could you please list what you've been eating? We hear this over and over again -- just because you are giving up grains and potatoes does not mean to are giving up carbs! There are plenty of carbs in fruits, vegetables, honey, and properly prepared yogurt! — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
Guest guest
Wanted to jump in here as you mention low blood sugar. I have a similar issue with going hypoglycemic unless I'm careful; I'm insulin resistant, though. I have to really watch my intake of fruits and high-sugar veggies like carrots, or I will definitely go hypoglycemic. And I have to eat small snacks throughout the day so I eat something every 2 hours. This strategy keeps my blood sugars fairly level and I can maintain energy reasonably well. I generally have one or two servings of fruit per day unless my candida levels are high; one is a diluted juice, one is a cooked low-sugar fruit, usually applesauce. I always have the fruit in combination with a protein/fat/carb, always at the end of the meal. This goes against a lot of expert advice, but it works best for my metabolism. The only time I have a fruit by itself is when my electrolytes crash and I need an emergency diluted apple juice because I don't have my ELyte with me. In other words, I never snack on fruit alone, or I go hypoglycemic. I use a blood glucose meter regularly; it has helped me figure out what foods and combinations of foods work best for me and my metabolism. My doctors didn't suggest this, of course, but they have been interested to see the results log I keep. My blood glucose levels have improved greatly since being on SCD. Apparently my pancreas isn't giving up on me as yet! But I had to fine-tune my food choices and when I eat them (and how I prepare them, etc.) in order to get my body functioning reasonably well and keep my chronic symptoms manageable. It's worked, thank goodness. Kim M. SD 5+ years >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I know I am still getting carbs in certain foods. I got blood-work done recently and my blood sugar was low, and it was the first week of the diet. I eat a piece of fruit or vegetable with each meal and snack on carrots, apples, etc. Have made the cinnamon raisin bread which contains honey put have no yet attempted the yogurt. The last time on the diet I did not feel or notice a difference, but this time around I feel week and sluggish along with the blood pressure symptoms. I know I had to increase my water intake due to the ileostomy, maybe food is the same thing.
