Guest guest
My 14 year old who is on the diet does not have daily bowel movements. I just wondered what your opinion is of that. I personally think she eats too many nut products per day. Give me some tips on what to eat or do so that she has a bm every day. Also, wondered if you all go one or two days without a bm. Maybe it's normal and I'm freaking out for nothing. Marla To: BTVC-SCD Sent: Thu, November 19, 2009 7:04:19 AMSubject: Bell and Turkey I just bought one of these turkeys at the supermarket. Guest guest
Sorry to post again but I thought I would tell you what she eats on a daily basis: Brkt-egg, gf toast (which is not legal, I know) 2 waffles made out of nuts, honey Lunch, - nut product such as muffin, salad with homemade oil and vinegar dressing, SCD cheese, chicken, cantalope, grapes, Supper - steak or chicken with veggies and probably a nut product for dessert. Snacks - either a nut waffle or a nut muffin, etc. and fruit Also, she drinks about a gallon of distilled water a day. Wondered if that is ok. Thanks in advance for any reply. Also, she has real bad gas a lot of times. I feel that if she doesn't have a bm for a day or 2, the gas gets worse obviously. Guest guest
It seems very very nut heavy to me. And doing the same thing overand over is not going to improve things, just keep them the same. How about a week or two of adding in more broths/hearty meatvegetable soups that have cooked a lot. This kind of thing is verysatisfying in winter anyway. What about veggie - cheese casseroles? Or fish? How about yogurt? Has she had a current Geneva Diagnostics test - what is hernaturopath doing to tinker with her gut ecology and improve it? Is she on anything like garlic, or oil or oregano, coconut oil? Guest guest
Mara, Fatty things upset her stomach. So lately I have tried to stay away from stew meats and roasts. She hates fish. The yogurt seemed to bother her last time I made it. We did a test in the summer regarding her gut thru the nutritionist. A small parasite was detected at that time. She's on a lot of supplements. She's not on garlic, etc. To anyone out there, It's so hard to cut back on the nut products as that is the only sweet treat she gets. And she eats a lot of fruit. I always tell her she eats the healthiest diet than any other 14 year old she knows. They eat candy for lunch and pop. I just feel that she denies herself so much and now she can't even eat the nut products like she usually does. It gets very frustrating. Like she says, the diet is hard to stick to as it is but she never feels good anyway on it. So what's the point? It would be hard enough to be on the diet but at least if you felt better, then the sacrifice and the denying are equal. But she still never feels good. I guess I just need to vent. The bottom line is though that I can't imagine her going back to how she used to eat. So I feel like we're stuck. She has to stay on this diet, which is hard for a 14 year old to adhere to , but then she never feels good anyway. UGH!!!! As far as the gallon of water per day, does anyone see that as too much? Guest guest
Marla, Must be a great person, tolerant. The diet is not simple to live with when out and about. A couple of treat possibilities: how about meringue cookies? Can be vanilla or honey lemon and yum how about a smoothies sometimes? I love smoothies, and so easy to try new possibilities. I pretty much always have frozen bananas.... the rest is whatever is aroound. And how about kale chips? sort of like potatoes chips--a little more fragile, but with good crunch. Wash and dry kale. Can remove stems, tho we like to pick them up by the stem to nibble. Simply spray with some good olive oil. sprinkle w good salt, and bake on low heat, maybe 300 for 10-20 minutes Hope any or all are ones she'll like/enjoy making for herself. Guest guest
As far as the gallon of water per day, does anyone see that as too much?Doesn't really seem like a person could drink too much water. As long as she feels good on that amount, it seems like it would be fine. You say that she doesn't feel better on the diet. It seems like, before you think the diet doesn't work for her, you maybe should try to adhere to it 100% at least for a few weeks and see what happens? I saw that she's still eating a piece of GF toast in the morning, and that might be what's holding her back from progressing. It also might NOT be what's holding her back, who knows, but it seems like it would be worth a shot just to try to cut that out for a while.Have you tried digestive enzymes with fatty foods to see if that helps her tolerate them better? As long> as she feels good on that amount, it seems like it would be fine. That's the key: feeling good on that amount. They used to say eight glasses a day. They've changed that to: drink when you're thirsty or if you feel dehydrated. A gallon a day is a lot. I couldn't do it. And wouldn't want to.n-- Now available. A fine Christmas gift for cat lovers. Guest guest
The first thing I would do is eliminate the GF bread, because otherwise, you're not really following SCD. I'd also consider eliminating the raw fruit. Second, I'd make the nut baked goods with nut butter rather then nut flour. I'd also limit them to 2 or 3 servings (I can't remember if Elaine said 2 or 3). Third, I'd try making the yogurt with coconut milk or nut milk, since the goat milk wasn't working. And as a last resort, I'd start over with the intro, and add one new food every few days to see if you can discover the culprit that's keeping your daughter from healing. One other thing I would recommend is to try to help your daughter understand that you don't have to eat a bunch of junk to be happy. People tend to base all events around food, when really it should be about spending time with people whose company you enjoy. I have this problem at times, because family and friends just don't seem to think I can be happy eating SCD food while they chow down on SAD food. But I am, because 1. I know that I'm doing what's best for my body, and 2. I happen to think SCD food is quite tasty! Your daughter's friends who eat candy and pop for lunch are going to be in a world of hurt someday when their bad diet catches up with them. Also, maybe you could ask Alyssa for ideas on good foods that are easy to take to take to high school. Holly Crohn's SCD 12/01/08 > > Mara, > Fatty things upset her stomach. Guest guest
I now have poor digestive motility, so deal with chronic constipation. The first two years on SCD I experienced frequent bouts of more severe constipation despite doing all the usual things -- it seemed to be part of my healing process. The important thing I learned about not having a daily bowel movement was to gauge my discomfort level. If I started getting uncomfortable I knew I'd have to increase my magnesium dosage or be ready with a water enema in case things didn't start moving. But some days I felt no discomfort even though I didn't have a bowel movement, so I learned to not worry. I think our digestions begin to process our food more completely, so less waste, so no bowel movement some days. Everyone has a slightly different rhythym, so normal bowel movements can be twice a day to once every 3 days. The important thing is discomfort level. Having said that, however, I learned early on in SCD to limit myself to only one serving of an item made with nut flour. And to use a blend of nuts flours; 100% almond flour really slows down my digestion. If I have more than one nut flour muffin per day (and muffins are about all I make with nut flour) I will definitely be uncomfortable by the next day. I drink a lot of water in a day, and have since I was a small child. Sometimes it's 3 quarts, sometimes a gallon, probably more some days when I'm working outside in the heat and humidity. This is right for me; helps with my swallowing problems (part of having Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction) and helps with my metabolism. I'm tested regularly for diabetes, as thirst is one of the symptoms. I am always on the edge of dehydration, per my doctors (and nurses), so I need to drink water constantly throughout the day. I'd check in with your doctor's daughter about the water consumption, make sure she isn't developing something else. But it might just be normal for her, as it is for me. It has to be difficult for your daughter to need a different type of diet than all her friends. As soon as she starts feeling better it might become easier. Perhaps cutting back on the nut flour items and pushing more vegetables and meats will help her start to feel better, which is motivation to stay on SCD 100%. Kim M.
