Guest guest
Good question. I have been on diet for almost two years and have had UC almost four years. But I look like I have aged 10 years in that time. I do feel better now than before I was on SCD but definitely do not look younger, even though I weigh the same now as I did when I was 18 (currently 39). What can we do? Guest guest
Same thing with me too. As soon as I got UC I aged like crazy. Grey hair, gaunt look. I think it was more stress than nutritional absorption. > > Good question. I have been on diet for almost two years and have had UC > almost four years. Guest guest
Hi Christy, Yes, I understand this totally, if you have had Crohns or colitis over 10 years, continual dehydration and use of constant prednisone (not sure if you take this)will dry and thin the skin. I don't know how long you've been sick for. I'm new to the diet and feel better already so hopefully some of that will translate to my skin. Having one's hormone levels checked to is probably wise. bibi > > Hi all, > > Just curious, has anyone experienced premature aging (e.g., at 30 I have a > lot of creping and fine lines around my eyes and people assume I'm closer to > 40) due to inability to absorb nutrients through the gut? Funny thing: I have been told I look no older than 40. And I'm 57. I'd probably improve the appearance if I could be bothered to darken my silvering hair. <laughing> I don't think not eating polysaccharides has anything to do with " looking older. " But I do think the stress and strain of illness can be a factor -- my hair got MUCH more silver last year when I was going through the cancer surgery and the apnea testing. Guest guest
Well, before I started using Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN 3 mg cream), my dh said that my cellular age was around 90. I’m not sure what he is basing that on, but I concur. I am 55, no spring chicken, and have worked outdoors most of my life so I have lots of sun damage even though I slathered on the sunscreen over the years. I have watched my skin basically collapse over the last few years. I know that skin loses elasticity as we age, but this was rather dramatic. I think a lot of early aging for bowel-diseased people is the result of dehydration, malnutrition and massive stress on the body’s abilities to cope. After 2 years on the SCD my hair started (and continues) to grow in brown instead of white. So at least my body was again able to absorb nutrients, like zinc. My dehydration issue has resolved recently so I no longer feel dehydrated or get dehydration headaches. This was a big deal for me. Do you know the trick for checking to see if you are dehydrated? Pinch the skin between your thumb and forefinger. If the skin snaps back, you are hydrated. If the skin does not snap back you are dehydrated. I have been on LDN for 5 months now and dh says I look years younger, that the color is back in my cheeks. I am finally gaining weight, even on a low carb SCD. This is the best I have ever felt, and the best I have looked in years. My skin even looks better. No wonder LDN is called an anti-aging drug. www.LowDoseNaltrexone.org I found coconut oil to be helpful and soothing as a lotion. I use it on my face and arms. It takes a few hours to soak into the face, so I look kinda shiny for awhile. I have totally improved over time with the SCD and LDN. They are a great combination. Guest guest
Thank you Carol. This is very encouraging. My skin snaps back, but then again my eyes are always red and dry, I look gaunt around my eyes, under my eyes is all lines and crepes, I urinate all the time, and my veins stick out grossly all over my arms and a few other places. I LOOK dehydrated, for sure. And chronic constipation, all that. Makes me think that I am very possibly dehydrated. I really want to look into LDN. My gut trouble is yet undiagnosed (years ago it was “IBS” but I have a colonoscopy in Jan for new evaluation). But I do have Hashi’s and many allergies and food intolerances, so LDN does sound up my avenue. Now the problem is finding a doc who will be on board. Guest guest
Are you familiar with the SCD Electrolyte recipe? http://www.scdrecipe.com/recipes-drink/electrolyte-drink/?tid=1 & oid=452 & sid=aebb46 I drank this daily for years and it really helped. You can leave out the honey, but then drink some diluted fruit juice ½ hour after drinking the electrolyte drink. Others have posted that they drink E-lyte, an electrolyte drink, but I have never tried it. I have stopped urinating so much, frequency has decreased by probably a third. I think my colon has healed to the point where it can absorb water again. The shift happened, coincidentally (or not) when I started the LDN, so I do not know what is cause & effect. I’m just grateful! I hope you find a doc to prescribe LDN for you. Guest guest
Carol, Thanks so much!! I’d feel more comfortable leaving out the honey due to yeast issues. I’m hesitant to do fruit even, but I’ll see how it goes. Wow, I just looked up E-lyte and it looks FABULOUS!! No fillers or artificial sweeteners, woo hoo! Couple questions on the LDN. I’ve read that it should not be taken with steroids. I wonder if this is pharmacological or physiological doses? I’m weaning off Medrol now, down to 4.5 mg, so it’s a physiological dose. Also, I read that LDN can be ineffective if you have candida issues. I do. L Do you know if this is a total deal-breaker? Guest guest
Good advice from Mara re: getting candida overgrowth under control with anti-fungals. I am using a product called Lauricidin, which is simply monolaurate from coconut. www.lauricidin.com Plus, no honey and eating low carb. LDN tends to aggravate candida (I don’t know why). Oh, another anti-fungal is Saccharomyces bouldardii, a community-minded yeast, that, according to Marilyn “eats candida for lunch”. I only take 1/day and got it from KirkmanLabs.com Other anti-fungals include coconut oil, oil of oregano, olive leaf extract, grapefruit seed extract, Diflucan, Nystatin. So far I am doing well with the Lauricidin and coconut oil (and low carb). LDN, as Mara said, can be taken with 10 mg. steroid, anything over 10mg then becomes contraindicated because steroids are immune suppressants and LDN is a immune modulator and they would cancel each other out. Guest guest
Thank you Mara! > What is the difference - not familiar with the terminology? Physiological is the amount your adrenals would output, where pharmacological is a higher dose for other purposes. I’m actually on it for adrenal support. I started on Cortef (HC) but burned through it too fast, so doc switched me to Medrol. > Anyway, you can use it with 10 mg prednisone - that's the lowest level that appears helpful. > So if Medrol is like prednisone in strength - then you can use it at your current level. Medrol is 5x stronger than HC, while prednisone is 4x stronger. So if 10 mg prednisone is equivalent to 40 mg HC and 4.5 mg Medrol is equivalent to 22.5 mg HC, then I think I’m in the clear!! >> Also, I read that LDN can be ineffective if you have candida issues. Guest guest
I only started to get some little crepe like lines around my eyes this year (I'm 34). It's rather depressing, because I've always looked much younger then my age (in high school, I looked about 12). I don't really know how I look compared to other 34 year olds though, because I mostly just see old people where I live. Guest guest
Now I am tolerant internally of coconut oil. At first, using Spectrum VCO, I was not tolerant – it made my throat hurt and feel scratchy. Since I switched to Tropical Traditions VCO I have no reaction. Don’t know if it is the brand or if whatever was going on in my throat resolved itself. I have no clue! I would just slather it on and see what happens, if anything. I don’t see how it could hurt, unless you have a allergic reaction like a rash where you’ve applied it. If that happens then wash it off I guess. I must have oily skin because I also have sebbhoreic dermatitis on my face, a stubborn yeast. I started applying coconut oil to my face to see if it would help kill the yeast. It helps some.
