Guest guest
Hi everyone, Hope this finds you as healthy as possible. I have some labs back and haven't had a chance to talk to the doc about them yet. I looked them up on line and am not really happy with what they may represent. My last visit to the endocrinologist my labs showed problems with my T3, progesterone and adrenal glands. I have started the armor thyroid and they just doubled it. I have also started the progesterone in a cream that gets absorbed through the skin. But after being on these for over a month, the doc/PA ordered more labs for insulin & lipid profile. the majority came back fine but my HDL was 33 with the normal being greater than 35 and the C-peptide is 7.17 and the range is 0.8 - 4.0 I know the HDL is usually used as an indicator for heart disease and the c-peptide is used to diagnose diabetes. But my BS was normal as was my cholesterol and LDL's . What are your thoughts or experiences with this???? Thanks in advance, you all are such a wonderful lot of people. Guest guest
AnnMarie: I wouldn't worry too much about the HDL. Again each lab is different. I just had my blood workup done because I need to be cautious of diabetes. My cholesterol was 199 just under the desirable. My triglycerides were a little high but have come down each year. My HDL was 43 and they said under 40 is desirable. My LDL was 107 and optimal is 100. It could be just diet and exercise. I know I exercise with step aerobics twice a week and walk the dog about 20 blocks 4 to 7 times a week. And I watch what I eat, too. Could be just genetics, also. I always laugh when they say to bring down my triglyceride is by cutting down on alchol and sweets. I'm lucky if I have a drink in a week and sweets, cookies last forever in our house and ice cream, too; and they say exercise. But now they added to watch my carbs. Now that makes sense because for snacks at night I will have a few cheese and crackers. And because your number is so close to what is normal I wouldn't worry too much. But ask the doctor questions about it to put your mind at ease. Nerenhausen mom to Leah AM L wrote: Hi everyone, Hope this finds you as healthy as possible. Guest guest
I don't know about the other but AST and ALT are liver enzymes. These go higher when the liver is stressed. A virus can cause them to temporarily go up, but you really need to keep checking them until they return to normal. How high are they? We have a lot of experience with this, as liver disease was Gracies first symptom of mito. As far as books and websites go, I am no help on that too. I usually just put "liver disease" into my search engine to find things out. Also if they are really high, your pediatrician may suggest checking his ammonia levels and his clotting time. They usually wont check until they have been up for some time, and they are very high, but you never know. Please feel free if you need any more info. Guest guest
www.webmd.com is actually pretty great when you put in 'basic metabolic panel' or CBC into the search it will give you all the normal and then what it means if they are low or elevated. The ALTs are liver function tests. I am not sure it is has the amino or organic acids, but you can try. Also there is another site that is not always helpful but you can try...the link is below. The problem with this one is finding the right place to look. Guest guest
As far as the AST and ALT goes, no they are not bad. With Grace they started to worry when the levels were in the 120-150 range, and they still thought it was just a virus. At her highest she was 2000+ on both AST and ALT. Thankfully, for her, a mito diagnosis came shortly after and the cocktail brought them down to a much more comfortable place. Through all of this, she had to go through 3 liver biopsies (2 needle type, one open liver wedge). She will always have permanent scarring on the liver due to this. She will always have to be extremely careful with medications, and no drinks on the weekend for her. Her last four liver studies have been good. I think her levels are now in the 60-80 range, and everybody is quite pleased with this. I would ask your doctor to keep checking this when there are other blood draws. Although liver problems with mito are not common, they can get very serious, very fast. Best wishes.

The AST is 60 (normal range 15-50). My impression is that they can get much higher with liver disease, and this is pretty mild?? His aspartic acid (aspartate) in the amino acid urine test was 182 (normal range 9-89), so that one seems rather high. But it was normal in his plasma test. I would love any info or experience you might have. Thanks! Lynne

Guest guest
Thanks ! I wasn't concerned when I called and first heard the results, but after looking up info and finding some vague stuff about how it's always an indicator of liver damage or other problems, I was a little concerned. But it's good to get some feedback, about it not being a big deal. We still have no idea what is going on with our son, this test was just to get a baseline to try to figure it out. When he has another bad episode we'll do more testing. I'm a little surprised that they didn't check lactate or ammonia levels, though, as I was sure the neuro had wanted those checked. Elevated lactic acid. His amonia levels have always seemed fine. Its a very long hard road trying to test these kids. I wish you the best of luck. Now that I think about it, this test was only to get a baseline on lots of things, but he already had a screening of a few things in May of 03, and that one tested lactate and ammonia. I think ammonia was low then, though, which was why she wanted it checked again. I'll ask the ped about that. Lactate was normal last time so that one probably doesn't matter right now. It will get checked when he has a bad episode. (So will the ammonia, I think.) So it's probably fine. Lynne
