Guest guest
Hi. I have a question which I know will be extremely subjective. About how long on average does it take for food to pass all the way through your system if you are having " D " ??? From the time you eat it until it comes out? How long does it take time wise for a " normal " BM???? The reason I ask is because I am now three weeks into the diet and am having a very odd pattern. I use the bathroom and have a relatively " normal " (for me) BM. A couple hours later I have complete " D " .... and a couple hours later a normal BM. I have been in this pattern for about two weeks now and it's pretty consistent. Every time i get a little encouraged I have " D " and every time I get discouraged I have a pleasant bathroom experience. This is making it extremely difficult to figure out what food is causing the problem and I am still on a relatively basic diet.

I have a similar pattern, but it's where I have a solid BM, then have D one or two times 5-10 minutes later. Then I don't have a BM for at least a full day, sometimes as long as two full days, THen when I do go, I have a solid BM, then 5-10 minutes later....you get the idea. It's strange. Who knows what our bodies are doing?? Sorry I don't have an answer for you =( Peace =)Alyssa 15 yoUC April 2008, dx Sept 2008SCD June 2009 (restarted)No meds! Guest guest
It sounds as if once your body does the normal BM, it is somehow still 'on a roll' so to speak. If you really want to know how long your transit time is, eat something that could be a marker. For example, tomatoes if you can tolerate them. I know that corn is illegal, but I could always tell when I had eaten it because my body never seemed to digest it! Just eat something you know you would recognize and be on the look-out for the next 24 to 48 hours! ; )Amelia

Do you have UC? It is very common for the first stool of the day for UC people to be normal or within that spectrum and then for there to be a transition to looser stool/ D later in the day. Just normal disease pattern. It shows that your disease is still active. And that the gut has not recovered enough for moisture to be reabsorbed through the intestine the way it is supposed to. Could also be the effect of something more laxative you are consuming during the day - like coffee, but not necessarily. This process is going to take time to heal. Some people find L-glutamine helpful for that condition - but it doesn't work for everyone - gave me intestinal cramping. Mara
Guest guest
I've looked into digestive motility and intestinal transit time a bit since I deal with poor digestive motility and chronic constipation now that I have a dysfunctional upper GI. There is no "normal" intestinal transit time, but on average, it takes 24 to 48 hours for a mouthful of swallowed food to come out the other end, as digested as it gets. Some people have longer transit times, some have slightly less, but usually not less than 12 to 18 hours (per the experts). There are a lot of yards of intestine for the food/chyme to get through. It is also normal for some parts of our intestinal tract to move slower/faster than other parts. When you're trying to find a culprit food you not only have to consider what you've swallowed within the past 24 to 48 hours, but also something you swallowed at the last meal. Because both peristalsis and the upper GI reaction to fat and/or fiber comes into play. I know, confusing. What you're describing, having a second or third bowel movement that is watery or complete D. after the first more normal one is due to peristalsis. Peristalsis is the muscle action along the intestinal walls that move the food/chyme/particles along the way down the intestinal tract. Most of the time our bodies have increased peristalsis after a bowel movement and after eating. If you are dealing with colitis, so have a greater presence of watery stools to begin with, then this increased peristalsis can trigger a faster evacuation, before the descending colon has a chance to absorb most of the water. Sometimes when you eat a food or swallow a supplement that your upper GI isn't tolerating, such as a high-fat item, then peristalsis increases to try to rush the item through and get rid of it -- or have it come back up through vomitting. There is still lots of experimenting to do, to figure out what your problem foods or supplements are. And other factors come into play, as well, such as the form of the digestive disorder you're dealing with, the healing process, stress, and so on. All we can do is try to figure out what the problem might be, do some experimenting. If nothing significant happens, then we can guess that it is just the way your digestion is working right now, and just continue on through the healing process
Guest guest
, At the start of the SCD, for the condition my gut was in, food would pass through me consistently in as little as 12 hours or less. I recognized the bits of tomato skin in the toilet the morning after eating them. My motility was very fast, my metabolism speeding. Motility speed is now much improved, has slowed considerably for me. The pattern you describe is very familiar to me. You will improve, hang in there!
