Guest guest
Lucia, Congratulations on not smoking!! I have never smoked so I don't know how hard it is to quit. My husband decided on July 5th that he was going to quit and he did. He got the patches thru Kaiser and he has done wonderfully. He had smoked for 20+ years and had a rough time at first, but now he is doing fine. He chews alot of gum....He has put on a little weight, but he is aware of it and has been walking with me. He is also overweight, but is not going to have the surgery. He is about 50lbs overweight....and is going to start eating better and walking. He just seemed to have uncontrollable munchies when he first quit....now it isn't so bad. I think his body was just going thru some major changes. Keep up the good work.......you will feel so much better! Guest guest
Lucia... Great job!!! My boyfriend, , quit smoking as of August 1...also using the patch. In fact, today he starts on the lower milligram patch, so he's happy about that. He smoked about a pack a day...started at age 14 and he's now 43. This has been a tough road for him...particularly on Sunday afternoons. He gets a little depressed, especially if he can't get ahold of me. (He lives in Paris, and sometimes Im off doing my own thing, and it winds up being Sunday evening for him.) I tend to think that maybe it is because he knows a stressful week is coming up, and he's not going to have his crutch, you know? I told him that I understand how "naked" he feels...or like his skin has been peeled off a bit. For me, i don't have sugar, caffeine, or wine...or just carbs in general, to help me cope with my anxiety, boredom, stress, whatever. I'm having to find other ways to cope. And alot of the time, it's him that gives me the comfort I need. I'm trying to do the same for him. We signed up for the smoking cesssation newsletter at Kaiser. Go onto the member website, if you haven't already, and look for it. They have good tips, and interesting facts..and they help you figure out why you are quitting and what will motivate you to continue on. Initially, your metabolism does slow down a it when you quit smoking. It isn't just getting the munchies...if you think about it, for example, your first "potty break" of the day may be brought on by your morning cigarette. So, that slows down a bit. But, it will change back and normalize with time. Good for you. Keep it up. This is a great thing you are doing for yourself. Just think...once you have the surgery and you lose the weight...all of those great clothes you'll be wearing won't stink like cigarettes! no more little holes in everything you wear. Your teeth will be whiter...and you'll extend your life considerably by having the double benefit of clean lungs and clean arteries!! Keep it up. Guest guest
Good for you Lucia, I can only imagine how tough it is to kick two addictions at the same time. Along time ago I used to use smokeless tobacco. I would go through periods of using it for several months, and then get sick of it and stop for several months. I finally stopped going back to it and will never again. I flirted with cigarettes when I was 18. Then one night a buddy and I each bought a pack of Marlboro's and a bottle of M/D " Mad Dog " 20/20. (a " fortified " wine - metal screw cap and requisite paper bag to drink from). Anyway, he immediately picked up a girl and left me alone with the whole lot...which - in my now womanless, depressed state - I consumed over the next several hours. Two bottles of fortified wine and chain smoked two packs of cigarettes. I felt like such crap the next day I never wanted cigarettes again. Now that you no longer smoke, you will have several side benefits - other than not contracting lung cancer and dying prematurely of a horrible lingering death. You will no longer announce your presence with the smell of used tobacco that used to hang on your clothing. Your teeth and fingernails will be whiter. You will have more money to spend since you no longer need to buy them. You might think about putting that money in a special piggy bank. Depending on how often you bought a pack, put that money in a jar and at the end of the month, spoil yourself. Do something nice as a reward for not smoking anymore. I wish you good thoughts Lucia...take care of yourself! : ) > Just wanted to share this with the group - But I think my weight is > going back up....I would rather give up food then cigarettes. but > Kaiser does not give you a choose, it is both or no surgery for me. > > Lucia
Guest guest
Lucia, I didn't have the added pressure of acceptance for surgery and when I quit I packed on 70 pounds. I was an eating machine and didn't care. Now on the other hand this weight gain is what qualified me as it added all these other medical problems on top of it. For me the first three days were the roughest, so maybe your experience will be the same and you will get through with flying colors. Guest guest
If you smoke a pack a day...and assuming the price doesn't go up...in ten years, you will have saved over $26,000!!! How's that for plastic surgery?
