Hi everyone, I saw this article on a class action as a result of improper care of patients at VA hospitals. I immediately thought of you and maybe this will applicable to some other members too. Whether or not you choose to participate, it still might be good info to be aware of. Kim PellettVeteran Medical Malpractice Concerns have been raised about the conditions in Veteran Administration (VA) hospitals. Unhealthy conditions have been found that could spread infection, poor cleaning and even vermin have been found in some VA hospitals. Inspectors have found that some staff members are not properly supervised. False reports have been filed by some employees claiming essential medical devices like defibrillators have been checked and maintained, when they have not. Supervisors have been found missing when they were supposed to be working, and supervisors have been accused of giving heir computer passwords

to resident physicians, allowing them to cosign their own reports without supervision. At least 63 cases of malpractice have been found between 1997 and 2002, that resulted because of the failure of a supervisor to oversee residents, including misdiagnosis, surgical and medication errors, and inadequate care. Veterans or their family who have been injured or suffered negligence at a VA hospital may sue the US government under the Federal Torts Claims Act (FTCA). Some hospitals have adopted a so-called "apology law" whereby they admit their mistakes immediately and negotiate with the victims for very low settlements. While this does give the family some short term financial gains, lawsuit settlements are typically 6 to 28 times greater than what hospitals are offering. If you have experienced injury or substandard care at a VA hospital, It is highly recommended you consult an attorney experienced in VA medical malpractice claims, as the

process is very tricky and one missed deadline, could cost you your right to monetary recovery for your injury. Kim, I seen dust behind a door when I seen a lung doctor last year I believe it was. That stands out in my mind there. The doctors there at this hospital which is Ann Arbor V.A. Hospital, Michigan are a mixture of ones that have been with the V.A. for various amount of years with their employment with the V.A. and internship doctors that come there to do their internship service. These latter mentioned doctors may in majority of them come from just down the street there in Ann Arbor from University of Michigan Hospital. There is probility villages in the U.S. or the world for that matter that are smaller than the U. of M. Hospital. The lung, eye, and neuro docs that I seen at Ann Arbor V.A. Hospital were all good that I seen there except for one. This one was a lung doc that was sarcastingly talking to me when I seen him way back in 2002. I don't see him no more since that year. Kim, the main "beef" or

complaint I have is with a rheumalogist doctor and my very own primary care doctor I seen at this V.A. Health Clinic I go to in the north part of this metro area. This has to do with this inflammatary pain in my legs and both of these "BOZO'S" are not willing to put in a refferal for me to have an MRI done on my legs. This health clinic is like you or anybody else go to where you are treated using your insurance, or state medical coverage, and that you may or may not have stablished a primary care doctor for you and/or other family members. Tracie, probility knows all these different types of places to go for medical care/treatment. Here in Michigan, HMO's (Health Maintenance Organization's) and another type are here locally in this area. So this V.A. Health Clinic is in a way like a HMO just for vetreans just like someone has insurance working at a employer goes to a HMO for health care. Before I decided to go with the V.A. Health care system back in August, 2002 I was

seeing Dr. at Metro Health, Southwest Plaza further west from I live at about a mile away here in Wyoming. This Metro Health and the other ones are a HMO. They are a part of Metropolian Hospital in Grand Rapids. Now HERE'S A TWIST. Supposely I can use that Kent Health Plan and go back to Metro Health for medical care again and stop going through the V.A. It's shorter to go to a clinic, it shorter to go to a hospital using this medical plan than going through the V.A. (except for emergencies of course). This plan pays for things like Ct-scan's and such, but doesn't pay for surgeries. Y'all think I should switch back? Or just stay where I'am at? This is part of my delemia. Medical care through the V.A. is okay alot of times except for that transportation issue which I just had to put up with these past years. Yet other times this medical care through the V.A. just SUCKS (mildly making my point

here)!!!!!!! Minor update on myself. This pain in my legs is still not as bad like it was last year like I stated way back this spring. However, this periheral neuropathy has gotten worse. I feel at times this vibration of my nerves on the backside of my legs up to my thighs sometimes. I sometimes feel this going on my back, arms, and face. I'am taking Gabetin (mispelled?), generatic form of Neurotin, 300 mg. per capsule, prescribed twice in the morning & evening. I called and talked to an attorney staff person and the man is out of town and have to wait until Tuesday. This library and others are all close tomorrow and Monday (Labor Day), so I'll check back next week.
