Guest guest
the last time hailee was admitted one of the residents said, she wasnt a mito canidate because her brother isnt mito positive. He said the trait was carried on by the mom and if i had kids they would all have it. Is this true? timmy my son, has health problems but none to hailees degree, he is older and i just dont want to test him regardless, he has some of the signs that hailee has but in different areas. any advice would be appreciated. and princess hailee
Guest guest
That is not true at all. Yes you can inherit it from your mother, but the mom is the carrier then and the kids have a 50% chance of having it. Or, it can be inherited from genes from both parents, giving the kids a 1 in 4 chance of having it. Also, I think, some kids get it just as a fluke and it is basicly luck (or badluck) of the draw. I really do not know the specifics of each type of mito, and how they are inherited. This is just my knowlege from Dr. Cohen as we are expecting another baby. I am sure you will get some better info from others in the group. I hope Hailee is doing better. I am still thinking of her daily.

Guest guest
, Your first mistake was ever listening to a resident. I hate them with all of my being. Most have never heard of mito until they met your child. Now, the mito gurus still don't know how and why it is passed to children in such different ways-how would he know? It is not true that Hailee cannot have it because her brother doesn't. Not all children get it and it is like a crapshoot to what degree they will. Some get 10%bad mito from the mom and never present until they are old and some get 90 % bad mito and present at birth. There is no standard as far as I am aware. Please, please, please, never listen to a resident or even a doc who may have read one article on mito and claims to be an expert. You will exhaust yourself with the second guessing it will cause! They are sooo arrogant! presented at birth, I am 34 and presenting now, Molly is 2.5 and showing soft signs and Drew is 13 and midly affected. See, no rhyme or reason to it! Guest guest
, It all depends upon the type of disease that you have. Mitochondrial DNA is carried only by the mother. She and all her children would be affected. Other metabolic disorders (also called mitochondrial cytopathy) are inherited in other manners. How do they know that your son does not have mito? Has he had a fresh muscle biopsy? Have his labs been tested? Could he possibly have soft signs of mito? I am 40 and in good health. But I have very soft signs. My son is not functioning well. My DD is pretty healthy right now but has almost died at times. Some people with the same diagnosis have totally different clinical presentations.
