Thanks, not to get complicated. What if you have two cars? Do they still count one against you? Can you choose which one they count. We have two cars, mine is much less valuable then my husbands, but nobody really drives his (including him). Also thanks for the preg. info. I know it worked for her medicaid application, but I did not know it also applied for SSI. Funny thing is, last time we applied I was already pregnant, I did tell them and they just said wait until the baby is born to re apply. I am sure you are right though, why would it apply for one type of help and not another? Maybe I will try again.

One thing about cars and SSI- there was a law that passed due to a case in CA about 3 years ago allowing a family to have 1 new vehicle as long as it was used to transport the qualifying person to and from therapy, doctors visits, etc. The vehicle cannot be counted against you as an asset. Maddie received SSI for about 6 months 3 years ago (we, too, were just at the cutoff limit) her caseworker at income support was ready to deny her until I brought up the "One reliable means of transportation" issue, and she immediately replied with- "oh- you're right." Had I not known about that little factor, she would have let us walk right out of there with nothing. For anyone who is in desperate need of SSI, there is always the option of "selling" your vehicle/assets to a trusted friend/relative (without actually selling it, of coarse!) in order to offset any overage in order to qualify.

Another thing, - I'm not sure how it is where you live, but here in NM when you become pregnant your household size immediately increases by one as soon as the pregnancy is verified, not at the birth of the baby- you may want to look into that, then you won't have to wait until baby boy is born to try and reapply for Grace- you can start the procedures now. (We all know how long that can take!) Just a thought!

Re: SSI??????

We have gone through the same thing. Yes, they do take into account what you pay for insurance. I do not know for sure if they deduct for car payments, because cars are assets. I would think for $36 a month they will find something to get it under. Have you tried putting over the counter medications and copays into the mix, these can sometimes count. Eventually I gave up, for now, we are expecting another baby in Sept. so maybe then it may go through. How hard was it to get your son proven as disabled? We have not even gotten to that point yet, because they looked at financial first. I worry about them not looking at the whole picture for Grace. She does walk well and is developmentaly normal (exept speech), but she cannot even go outside if it is over 75 F until she gets a cooling vest. Also if she gets one virus it can set her back for months. Realisticly I do not know how she will ever be able to hold a job when I had to quit my job because day care was too much for her. I just hope SSI sees this. Best wishes.

With 2 cars I think the older one had to be ten years old, not too sure, though (we only had one vehicle, and it was new). I would definitely check on that SSI application- usually the Medicaid/WIC/SSI criteria (although the financial aspects may vary for each) are the same. HTH
