Guest guest
Just come back from the doctors. they had the results of my last blood test (have them 3 monthly because of the azathioprine) and they said my haemoglobin was dropping off and I was a classic case for iron deficiency. They want to test but I know they are right and they are going to want to put me on tablets (which apparently either cause diahorrea or constipation - like I need that!! - oh and make my stools black as well - joy!). My diet is very basic scd (not far past the intro even though I have been on it for a year and a half) and I can see that they are right and I need to get my ass in gear and add in some more iron-rich foods, but I wondered if there are any other scd legal options available to me (like a supplement I can take) to help me get back on track and avoid taking more prescribed medicines. Thanks, Mike SCD 1.5 years UC 7 years p.s. I did try and do a search for this topic on this forum but the search function doesn't seem to work if you try and go past the first page of search results. Don't know if any of the moderators have noticed this??
Guest guest
Hi Mike, If you can stand eating liver, eat beef liver as much as you can. I would think a 4 ounce serving two or three times a week would help greatly. If you don't like the taste you still have options. There are dessicated liver tablets you can buy in the vitamin section of a health food store. Or you can make liver tablets yourself by cutting up beef liver into small pea-sized bits and freezing them. Then swallow them like pills. Consider taking a vitamin C supplement as well, as this increases the absorption of the iron. If you're on the early stages of the diet you aren't eating raw fruits and veggies so you probably aren't getting enough vitamin C. I would go with liver before touching any iron supplement, just from past experience with horrible digestive symptoms from taking them. Guest guest
Someone recently posted on green smoothies. She can tell you the name of the book, you use green veggies/fruits and throw in a handful of baby spinach leaves. You can hide liver in hamburgers, meatloaf, lots of things if you can't or don't just eat liver. I have had a lot of problems since 2004 with iron/anemia. I have had several transfusions. Then someone mentioned Repliva 21/7. I went from 3.06 in November to 13.6 in April last year. Then the doctor wouldn't prescribe them because my bloodwork was great. She thinks I'm a hypochondriac tho (new doctor). I have felt really bad, had bloodwork and hemoglobin was 5.2. Now I have antibodies and they couldn't match me to get blood. I'm going to do the green smoothies, oysters, shrimp, cherries if I can find them, liver and a multi-vitamin with iron until it's normal. The lesser of two or all evils is via food. When that's not possible, try supplements--dessicated liver sounds legal and good to try. If it's not ER level, try to nip it in the bud. There is a file in one of the groups with high iron content. Lucy (Lucy's kitchen shoppe) told me on the phone azuki beans are ok and very high in iron--I love them. But on-list they said they aren't legal. They are tiny, red and sort of sweet. I get them in bulk at Whole Foods. If they aren't too advanced, try them. Hardly any hull so it works for me. Just double the amounts because they are tiny beans. Make sure it's azuki if you look for them. Good luck and my apologies in advance for saying the wrong thing on the subject ;-). Guest guest
Hi Mike, I know you've already received ideas for food which could help bring up your levels. If you *have* to go on a supplement, it can be really rough on your GI system. I had significant anemia a few years back, way before my GI symptoms were this bad (and before SCD). The 1st two I tried, including one Rx the hematologist insisted would not cause much GI distress were awful. The doctor then switched me to a prescription iron called Niferex---still caused a lot of C, but at least it didn't cause the agonizing pain the other ones did. Hope you can do this through the diet alone. Sue
