Guest guest
Using the store bought spices is a HUGE time saver for me, and i've been doing it since I started this diet 7 months ago. Since we aren't supposed to stop medicine with illegals in it, how bad is using store bought spices? I've been able to cut back on my medicine and overall i'm doing better than I ever have been. I'm thinking eventually I will hit a wall and stop getting completely better until I cut out the store ground spices.-UC - 1 yearSCD - 3.5 months 100% strict and 4 months restricted diet.Asacol - 4 pills 3 times a day - hopefully scd will help me get off these! Guest guest
Penzey's and Spice Island has lots of legal spices. Which ones do you mean? Chili powder kills me but Marilyn just posted a recipe for it. I like chipotle or ancho powder more anyway. Maybe whatever you are missing can be subbed somehow. My mom brined a turkey yesterday using oranges, lemons cut up, cloves, juniper berries, peppercorns, sea salt, lots of different things like that (I would never have thought of juniper berries but that's me) and it was awesome. Pineapple or any citrus, dried fruit, peppers ground up all have lots of flavor. There are lots of great cooks on here who can help you out on this one. Dried bay leaves also give lots of flavor, fresh thyme, fresh sage--the fresh herbs make such a huge difference! Good luck, a lot of the mixes are mostly sodium anyway. Just trying to throw out some ideas for you. Debbie 40 cd Using the store bought spices is a HUGE time saver for me, and i've been doing it since I started this diet 7 months ago. Guest guest
It's spices I already bought... like cardamom powder, allspice, thyme, cumin, ginger, curry, coriander, paprika ect. They are all McCormick ground spices. I have a ton of them. They aren't mixtures of spices, but i've heard they have illegals in them so they don't stick together. -UC - 1 yearSCD - 3.5 months 100% strict and 4 months restricted diet.Asacol - 4 pills 3 times a day - hopefully scd will help me get off these! Guest guest
, I really can't comment on choosing to ingest illegals, as it is your choice. I can tell you, however, that it is possible, with even less effort than going to the store, to buy top quality LEGAL organic spices really inexpensively. I go through Mountain Rose Herbs (just google them) in Oregon. I'd been using them for years and years, and then got sick and ended up on the diet. I wrote to them regarding the diet and whether or not they include any fillers in their herbs and spices, and this was their reply: " Dear Ellen, Thank you for contacting us here at Mountain Rose Herbs! Due to clumping issues in the past, we have had to add an anti-caking agent, Silicon Dioxide, to a few of our spices. Only the tiniest amount is added, and it is approved for organic food use. The Silicon Dioxide is added to -Chili Powder, Onion Granules, Cumin Powder, Cranberry Powder and Beet Powder. Those are the only spice products that have anything added to them. Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance. Thank you for your interest in our products and have a wonderful day! Warm Regards, Jody Customer Service " And not to sound like an infomercial, but their spices are truly excellent, better than anything you'll likely find in a store, and they are so inexpensive. I think my 8 oz. of cinnamon (and it was better than the high-end cinnamon I recently bought at a speciality store for ten times the price) was $4. The spices are ready to go, and there is no preparation involved. They are packed in plastic so you'll need to transfer them to glass (I use 4 and 8 oz mason jars with the airtight lids). They also have a much broader selection of herbs and spices than you'll find in any market. And they deliver to your door. MRH is also a great place to buy legal teas. Guest guest
I've read that about McCormick, people have problems or cross-contamination. You are early enough into the diet to start replacing the spices bottle by bottle. Start with what you use the most. Maybe you have a friend or relative who would love to have them so you don't feel like they are wasted ;-). Check with them first then package it up for the holidays maybe. Curry isn't legal you know in the bottle. There is probably a recipe for it someplace. I have used tumeric in it's place. A brand I haven't seen mentioned here but I found where I buy my DCCC is Morton & Bassett, San Francisco and it says All Natural, Salt Free, No MSG, No Preservatives, Non-Irradiated on the front of the bottle. I do not have a letter from them--it was hard to find juniper berries at the time and this brand looked good/legal to me. My mom bought whole allspice, peppercorns, everything and ground them yesterday. It's up to you but if you already feel it's a problem or going to be--start replacing here and there if you can't do it all at once and eventually you can go to the kitchen without worrying about which one is legal. Takes off a lot of stress. Debbie 40 cd.
Guest guest
since cumin powder has silicon dioxide in it, does that make it illegal? Guest guest
My spices were getting old anyway. I got rid of them and ordered new ones from Penzeys. Some legal ones I can find at whole foods. It was not worth the time invested in this diet to keep using Mc Cormick. Guest guest
Curry is a mix of spices--it's not a single spice so it's not legal. The rest would be ok if they are singles. Individual spices, of the better quality, are typically all right. Spice mixtures are dicey, because they so often contain things in addition to the spices. Beware of any mix that says " Salt, spices.
