Guest guest
I am leaning towards the DS instead of the rny because of the normal stomach and being able to drink with your meals. But I read on the website for a doc in Omaha that you CANNOT drink with your meals, with the DS surgery. Is this true? >>>>> Audrey: I think this really depends on the person. I know that IMMEDIATELY post-op (especially in the first three weeks), we aren't encouraged to drink with meals (it will make us feel 'fuller' and less able to get the protein/proper nutrients in). Also, some people have commented that they are unable to tolerate/drink with meals because their stomach gets upset. However, I haven't experienced any problems with this. I tried not to drink with meals immediately post-op, but it's something I'm really used to doing and I tried it (in small amounts) from the first few weeks on. I have been doing it ever since. I mean, I would follow your particular surgeon's instructions regarding immediate post-op drinking while eating, but I don't think this extends past the first month-post-op (I'd be really, really surprised if it did). Just wanted you to know that there are those who drink with meals post-op without incident (I'm four months post=op). all the best, lap DS with gallbladder removal DR. Gagner/Dr. Quinn assisting/Mt. Teri >> Teri, This also increases with time. At 1+ year out I can gulp 8 ounces at a time. If I wait a couple minutes I can drink some more. I can't do this with pop, the carbonation takes up too much room. But I can probably gulp 4 ounces of pop. This was a major reason I was taken by the DS, I wanted to be able to gulp. And yes I can! Guest guest
That is correct, you can drink before meals and 30 minutes after eating, if you have to drink during meals take little tiny sips. I was a big drinker at meals. I would drink 3 or 4 16 oz glasses at a meal, I simply need to drink at meals but only if I go to a resturant it is now a tiny, tiny sip here and there maybe 2 oz if I am their long enough. If I am at home usually will not get a drink. When I eat I fill up on food, if I drink even a little too much it won't go into my tummy and I either am in pain or I go to the bathroom and vomit it out. Funny but that is the only thing I don't like about any wls is that I cannot be a water gulper anymore. I would drink a 32 oz cup in almost one drink, no problem, then I would get another glass. With the DS though you can drink 3 or 4 oz in one drink, you can't do that with a RNY. That was my experience. I was never told not to drink with meals, but in the early post-op months, I chose not to because it filled my tummy too much and I couldn't eat my food! I gradually added drinks with meals, and now at 19+ months post-op, I drink and eat together just like pre-op. My understanding is that with RNY and other " pouch " procedures, one shouldn't drink with meals because the liquid can push food out of the pouch prematurely, which can adversely affect satiety and also cause the person to consume too much food. Since the DS preserves the pylorus, food can't be prematurely " pushed " from the stomach by liquid.
