Guest guest
My diet is very basic scd (not far past the intro even though I have been on it for a year and a half) and I can see that they are right and I need to get my ass in gear and add in some more iron-rich foods, but I wondered if there are any other scd legal options available to me (like a supplement I can take) to help me get back on track and avoid taking more prescribed medicines.I was always very anemic, and was on iron pills for a while. which never really helped. What really helped my anemia was green smoothies, since all dark leafy greens are pretty high in iron. They may be too advanced for you, I don't know, but I know they helped me more than red meat or iron pills. Peace =)Alyssa 15 yoUC April 2008, dx Sept 2008SCD June 2009 (restarted)No meds! Guest guest
Mike,I can tell you that my husband is running into something similar. He started doing a supplement called Spatone which is iron rich natural water from Wales. He was pretty anemic and the doctor wanted him on a high iron supplement (which didn't agree with his body). Anyway, it comes in sachets containing the water. It is only about 5 mg of iron, but acts like 40 in the body because it is absorbed so easily. He started with 1 a day and the doctor saw improvement but encouraged him to do more because his hemaglobin wasn't rising very fast. So then he started doing 2 sachets a day. He was still increasing his hemaglobin, but at about the same pace. She asked him to up it more because she noticed that his mean cell volume (MCV) started to decline. I finally told him that something else had to be going on to have this strange reaction. I did a bit of research and found that the body will actually sequester iron and store it away to keep the bad bacteria from getting it. He asked his doctor about it and asked if she would test to see if that was what was happening. His appointment is this next week and he will find out then. In the mean time, the local grocery store stopped carrying it (we live in the UK) and he is out of his supply. I am very curious to see what the results of the tests show. I say all this because my husband was bleeding a lot for several months and I do believe he was anemic because of that. Later on, though, the bleeding had stopped and his hemaglobin should have risen quickly with supplemenation if he was the 'run of the mill' iron deficient anemic. If you are not bleeding, it may be something your body is doing (sequestering the iron) to thwart the bad bacteria. Just a thought.AmeliaHusband UC 9 years, SCD 15 months
Guest guest
If it was me, the book I recently mentioned was " Green Smoothie Revolution. " The other juice book that I mentioned, but couldn't remember the name of was " Complete Book of Juicing: Your Delicious Guide to Youthful Vitality. " The reason I liked it was it had specific recipes for juices for specific medical conditions. Stacey > > Someone recently posted on green smoothies. Besides all kinds of liver and cooking on cast iron pots, as Alyssa suggested, I'd add in lots of kale and spinach. In a smoothy, or just as part of your food. Also beets. As in meat borscht, or roasted beets. Mara

Are beets legal? Because beets, or adding beets to your carrot juice or smoothies, adds iron. Beets don't have a lot of iron but apparently it is very easy to assimilate. I was told this ages ago when I needed to up my iron and I did a lot of greens and beets and so forth, and never did need the pills.

However, the probability is also excellent that many, if not most, of the recipes will contain one or more ingredients which are SCD illegal.
