Hi

I come here all the time and read the messages and you guys have

given me alot info about mito. My 5 year old son has MERRF- his

only symptoms are ataxia, speach delay, and trouble with fine motor

skills. He loves to swim. Yesterday her was in the pool for over 2

hrs, I could not get him to come out. When he did come out he was so

tired he had very little control over his balance. He still wanted

to go back in the pool. Last night his sleep was very restless, and

he talked all night. Does anyone know if getting this tired could

hurt him? Thanks.

Exercise if not stopped when fatigued can be harmful to people with Mito. It can cause prolonged episodes of weakness and an increased level of lactic acid levels if this is a problem with your child. I am unable to exercise vigorously because it caused me to become so weak and shaky and off balance and then it takes a while to get back my full energy. Lack of sleep, stress, metabolic instability, and overdoing exercise can all cause stroke like episodes as well which can temporarily or permanently cause nuerological damage. Allow your child to have fun, but watch to see when he is overfatiguing. If he seems to remain overly weak after vigorous activity you may want to limit it. I do know some Mito parents who allow their child to overexert themselves and they may get weak for a day or two and are fine and they allow it because they don't want to limit their child. It is an individual choice only you can make for your child. It is a good idea however to really watch to see what all occurs after the activity to see if anything more than short term fatigue occurs which may impact your decisions. We don't have to worry about Asenath (4) as her activity level is quite low by her own volition. I also have a 16 year old son who recently had his first noteable stroke episode following a virus comined with lack of sleep and tons of exercise (dance show rehearsal in January). I try to let him decide for himself how active to be but caution him to be careful and to rest if he feels he needs it. He always leaves Tumbling very weak and shaky and we have to pump him full of food/drink to help him recover. He worries me and yet I too do not want to limit him. It can be a very hard decision for sure. I do know if he had more problems than that, I would have no choice but to "try" to limit him. Hard to do for a active 16 year old. LOL Hope this helps you some. :) Darla: mommy to Asenath (4) Mito, CNS brain Vasculitis, strokes, SLE's, DAFO's, developmental delays, hypotonia, disautonomia issues, migraines, seizures, sensory issues- my dinosaur lover...
