Guest guest
Hi- I wanted to pose this question to the moms in the group. Has anyone continued to breastfeed during/after surgery? I have a 15 month old daughter who still likes to breastfeed in the mornings and evenings. It si not her primary source of nutrition but a comfort thing. The nurse at the office told me there shoudln't be a problem since she is older and not relying on it as her main nutrition. I am just wondering how other people have handled this. She has never been seperated from me and I am nervous about the hospital stay and how she will handle it. Amy Fremont, CA Pre-Op July 2!!! Guest guest
I breast fed after a C-section but I refused all meds for pain except for 1 or 2 shots the first day after (that the doctor said would not cross over into my milk). I had an epidural for delivery. You need to talk to the doctor about the blood thinners, pain meds, etc. and if any will " cross over " in your milk and could have an effect on your daughter's health. You may pump and freeze some milk ahead and use this time to help her wean. Your eating will also be cut so that it may be harder on you to get enough water and fluids in and could cause you some real dangerous problems besides slowing your healing process. I know and understand the joys of breastfeeding...just be careful about your own health! Guest guest
Thanks for the replies. I guess I should be more specific. Is there anyone around here who managed to continue breastfeeding through and after the surgery? I am not interested in weaning my daughter. I appreciate the opinions and I am sure that they come from a good place but the doctors staff did seem to feel I could continue nursing, so I am looking for info on how people have handled it. Thanks! Amy Fremont, CA DS/BPD July 2, 2001!!

Having a c-section is vastly different Well, Machelle- I spoke with Delphine at Rabkins office and she said it was just fine. She seems to know what she is talking about in general. Secondly, as I said in my first post, I am not producing enough milk to support her- it is a comfort thing, not a nourishment thing. She is, after all, almost 15 months old and eats regular food. As, again, I said before, it would be different if she were a newborn and relying on breastmilk for every bit of her nourishment, but it just ain't so. And BTW I didn't say anything about doing this behind my surgeon's back. But thanks for the righteous indignation and stuff. ALL I WANTED WERE SOME RESPONSES FROM PEOPLE WHO HAVE DONE THIS. And just FYI, I have gotten some private responses from some women who have done the surgery and have continued to breastfeed with their doctors help and that of a lactation consultant. Amy Y. Guest guest
Amy, what's the consensus? I'm thinking about getting pregnant as soon as medically possible after the surgery (I'll be 40 in the summer and my biological clock is louder than Big Ben) and I'm committed to nursing. Also, has anyone had a home birth after having this surgery? Has anyone been refused? Anyone had a FIRST pregnancy after this surgery?
