Guest guest
Ok girlfriend, It is time to get this fixed. No messing around. That's an order. Got it. Love to you, Tracie I do hope he sends a very nasty letter to dr prettypants (aka nobrains) and that he reams her a new asshole. Guest guest
OMG, I just had the most excruciating procedure in my entire life today. You guys know that my oh so so doctor sent me to a pain clinic because she didn't want to write my perscriptions for 1 Lortab aday, and so I went, they did a ct scan, found a L4-5 bulging disc, plus pseudo-arthritis of the sacral spine, with many spurs up and down my spine, the doctor actually asked me if I needed something more than the Lortab, and I said No, I don't want to get addicted to anything, and the Lortab knocks the pain down enough that I'm comfortable..and the pain is mostly when I stand or try to walk. Well today we followed up with this disc-graphy, they stuck long needles into the spinal joints themselves, inject dye to see if you are leaking the dye they inject into little cracks, which would make the disc non-functioning.. Needless to say, I screamed to the top of my lungs and my leg shoot up right off of the stretcher and I was face down, I nearly kicked the doctor in the head, this wasn't a reaction of mere pain is was like a reflex, I didn't have any control over it, he went to two other suspicious disc, the reaction wasn't like a reflex, but OMG, the pain was unbearable, I sobbed like a baby, and I had had Versed and fentyl..and a pretty heafty dose at that. The outcome is that I have 2 disc that are totally gone, and one that is still there but non-functioning. I was immediately whisked back to the ct scanner, and was told I had to have back surgery the sooner the better.. I have to have 2 disc reconstructed and the one has to be repaired. How does fun does that sound like for a Wednesday? Just another day,
Guest guest
, Thank you so much for the message. First of all, I am so very sorry that you had to go through this. You would think that they would of given you more for pain in the beginning or at least stop and give you more pain meds before continuing. Second, I too was sent to a pain specialist for the sharp stabbing pain in my left side. If you remember, I had my left upper lobe of my lung removed due to the sarc, and Ihave had trouble since then. So, this pain specialist, ordered up an mri. They really didn't find out why I am having this pain in my left side, but they did find out why at times I am having lower back pains, and also pain in my neck. I have bulging disc's. Now I will know what test to not have, or at least do it under anesthesia. Please keep us informed on what is going on, and have someone keep us informed on your surgery. Guest guest
Hi Lynne, sorry you're having to go through this too. But I tell ya, the test as painful as it was, it was necessary to find out how bad things were.. The MRI and CT only showed the bulging disc, with some degeneration of the other disc but certainly not the extent. I was shocked myself, I still am actually. I'll have to go to rehab after the surgery as no one here is well enough to actually take care of me.. my dad has parkinson's and my mom has her hands full with him, then she just had orthoscopic knee surgery thats giving her fits. So, I will be letting you all know when it happens, I'll be missing in action if you will due to the fact I don't have a laptop, and unless I can get internet access in a rehab hospital or nursing home, I doubt my son or my parents would bring my desktop to me.. It actually may break a bit of my internet addiction anyway.. lol I hope they find out why your having so much pain, in your side.. I just think as someone spoke today that the doctors just poo poo our symptoms away, and of course my doctor thought I was having to many complaints and all I was trying to do was give her my symptoms to try and help her out.. Crazy woman!!!.. They are wanting to send me to a different hospital for this surgery and I'm not sure about that, even though Vanderbilt hasn't done that much for me, it does have my extensive history, medications and all my other ologist.. Guest guest
Yeah Tracie, I'll have this done ASAP, and I'm with you about Dr Pretty Pants, I don't go back to see him for 2 weeks, but he has referred me to a Neurosurgeon that I know nothing about, but he is not privy to my medical records etc.. I know that I have the right to go where I want to go to have the surgery done and the doctor, I don't know a neurosurgeon at Vanderbilt, but I'd feel better knowing that my neurologist, endocrinologist and the rest of my ologist are near by.. Love ya, PS... I love your analogy of the head up the ole ARSE trick.. lol -- Re: Has anyone ever had a disc-o-graphy? Ok girlfriend,It is time to get this fixed. No messing around. That's an order. Guest guest
Hi all,This sounds like some kind of medieval torture device! And we're all so desperate to get the help that we need that we stand in line for stuff like this b/c we trust that ourt doc's will take care of us. Thank you for the info b/c if I ever have to have this done I WILL be asleep. Regarding pain in left side: I have a pinching (sometimes pretty sharp) pain in my LUQ. Never could figure out the cause but the spleen is in the general area so I wondered if it had something to do with it...(of course, nothing showed up on CT).. ..this pain has been off and on since 2000. Tracie, I almost fell off my seat when I read your part...but it would have taken me all day (and the fire dept) to get back up so good thing that I didn't! Guest guest
Theresa, Is that the only way that they can see if the disc is totally gone? Yuck! As far as Vanderbuilt, where is that located? I think that I know a girl that goes to Vanderbuilt University. She is incredibly intelligent. And isn' t Vanderbuilt hospital, where they are studying sarc? Please let me know. As far as my back and neck, I am not in "constant" pain as you probably were, but just enough that it is bothersome. As far as my side , he gave me a dx's of some nerve thing. He gave me a block in my back that seemed to help, for about 4 hours. Then it was back. I think that I will try another dr. Take care. Guest guest
Lynne, if there had been any other way, I certainly wouldn't have done this.. They warned me that if the disc was leaking, damaged in anyway that it would hurt.. I just didn't realize how "BAD"... Vanderbilt is a University Hospital here in Nashville, I know a Dr Wonder Drake that is absolutely "WONDERFUL" she is a infectious disease researcher and yes she is/did do a study on Sarc, in which Jan and myself participated. The down side is we don't and won't know what our personal research data showed, she did call me a few weeks after my inital visit with her and asked if she could collect some tissue from my lymph biopsies, that were saved after they used back in 1998 and 2002.. I told her of course.. The problem is, Vanderbilt is a very prestigious University Hospital, you have to have a 4.0 average to just be accepted, so I'm sure your friend is very smart. But the doctors know absolutely 'NOTHING" about systemic sarc, or neurosarc.. I have volunteered to go see Dr Baughman to help them in my care.. They don't want anyone from outside telling them how to care for any one disease!!! They mean, after all they are VANDERBILT!!! Bullshit, so this is why I can't get anything at all done. They don't believe in drawing ACE levels, CRP.. to let me know if my disease is in remission or if it needs a little tweaking with my Imuran. Sooo Lynne on a scale of 1-10 I would have to rate it a 2 at taking care of patients with sarcoidosis. Hugs, -- Re: Has anyone ever had a disc-o-graphy? , Thank you so much for the message. Guest guest
,I would rather go to a place where I was treated with respect and listened to (after all it IS my body and I know it better than anyone else...) even if that meant going to a less prestigious facility. So good for you as far as sticking up for yourself! I was really fortunate though to be accepted at s Hopkins Sarcoidosis clinic (is a pulmolnologist...spelled wrong but I cannot backspace b/c keyboard messed up!). That is a top-notch place with extremely knowledgeable people and I could not be going to a better place. The physician I see (twice) listens to me and that means a whole lot. Baltimore is a long way for me to go but it is well worth it. I still am maintained on my meds, etc., by my local pcp and other "ologists"...but they are glad to have JH in on this b/c they admit they are stumped. There are also other specialities that deal with sarcoid there...rheum, etc...but since I had bilateral lung nodules, etc., I was referred to the sarcoid clinic (again pulmo) and hopefully what helps with my lungs will help with the rest of me. Guest guest
teresa, are they offering any of the new procedures for repairing damaged disc. they have new ones that are less invasive & have shorter healing time with better outcome. time to go net (internet) hunting. When I saw the title of this email i nearly croaked. I didn't at first that you had already had it done, but I know what it was. they purposely induce the pain to figure out what the problem is, not only no but slap yourself for mentioning it no as far as i'm concerned. doctor's use this procedure kind of like a last resort when they can't figure out what is causing a patient pain in the back, etc. I had never heard of it until i went to work for vocational rehab, and one of the counselors explained to me what it was. e gads & little fishes. i'm glad they found the problem, but i am so sorry you had to go through that. i am sitting here shuttering thinking about it and wanting to throw up. (pls note I am not a queasy person). Take care of your sweet self ok. by the way I would not have written this if you had not already had the procedure done, I would have tactfully & gently tried to let you know that it was going to be uncomfortable (i know, i know what an understatement) but you don't scare people prior to a procedure, tenseness makes things worse. my prayers & thoughts are with you.............Connie wrote: OMG, I just had the most excruciating procedure in my entire life today. You guys know that my oh so so doctor sent me to a pain clinic because she didn't want to write my perscriptions for 1 Lortab aday, and so I went, they did a ct scan, found a L4-5 bulging disc, plus pseudo-arthritis of the sacral spine, with many spurs up and down my spine, the doctor actually asked me if I needed something more than the Lortab, and I said No, I don't want to get addicted to anything, and the Lortab knocks the pain down enough that I'm comfortable..and the pain is mostly when I stand or try to walk.Well today we followed up with this disc-graphy, they stuck long needles into the spinal joints themselves, inject dye to see if you are leaking the dye they inject into little cracks, which would make the disc non-functioning.. Guest guest
Lynne, to my knowledge this test can not be done under full anesthesia, because your reaction is how they know where the problem is. Ask your doctor if they ever mention it, but that was how it was explained to me///Connielynne zacharias wrote: Theresa, Is that the only way that they can see if the disc is totally gone? Yuck! Guest guest
, Did you send ms 0.4 a copy of the discography? No i did not type her score wrong, but somebody at vanderbilt looked at it wrong when she applied from the way she treated you. I declare, I think I would take it to her personally after the way she acted about your pain and your illness in general. everytime i think of the way she treated you i want to bite a ten penny nail. take care.............connie wrote: Lynne, if there had been any other way, I certainly wouldn't have done this.. Guest guest
That's exactly right Connie, they give you meds like if your gonna have a colonoscopy, supposedly you can't remember it.. but for some reason those drugs have never worked on me.. I " KNOW EVERYTHING " but I may forget what the doctor tells me the next day, which thankfully they had it all in writing for me.. Guest guest
Connie, I was a LPN in my time and worked for 25 years mostly in the ER, some hospice and homehealth.. but I had to stop work in 2001 due to the sarc. The nurse that was with me told me that when they injected the dye that it was gonna hurt, but still I didn't understand to the extent.. I screamed like someone had just shot me, and then started bawling uncontrolably, it was the most intense pain I can ever remenber having in my entire life. The doctor was very appologic, however when they swooped me over for the ct, the techician told me, that when they called her and told her what they wanted that it was horrible, and there was screaming and sobbing involved.. and mind you this is still with sedation. I haven't talked to anyone yet about new and improved less invasive procedures, but that sounds more like what I want more than those rods they put in your back and all that metal.. I don't want that!! Thanks for the information though, I'll be talking to the surgeons about it and making sure that's exactly what happens. Big Hugs, > OMG, I just had the most excruciating procedure in my entire life > today. They are wanting to send me to a different hospital for this surgery and I'm not sure about that, even though Vanderbilt hasn't done that much for me, it does have my extensive history, medications and all my other ologist.. Oh well, thanks for listening.. and I really hope you feel better soon!!! Hugs, -- Re: Has anyone ever had a disc-o-graphy? , Thank you so much for the message. Guest guest
, I'm so sorry to hear about this--and also that you have to undergo additional surgery! My son has never had a disc-o-graphy, but he had an experience a little like yours a few months ago. A pain clinic doctor recommended some type of nerve block to try to block the pain in his abdomen. They gave my son fentanyl and versed but the drugs didn't do anything to put him out. Instead, the versed seemed to have a " paradoxical " reaction: it made him more aware rather than less so. I wonder if that's what happened to you? Anyway, my son's procedure was agonizing like yours--they were sticking needles into his spine as well. When we got to him in the recovery room, he was screaming that someone had to bring him a knife so that he could kill himself and end the pain. And he's usually not a screamer! So my heart really goes out to you. I think often doctors don't realize that, for patients with neuropathic pain, any type of procedure runs very grave risks of causing serious pain. We are resisting even an EMG for our son at this point because we think the needles will cause serious (and potentially permanent) pain that just isn't worth the diagnostic value. Do you think a second opinion would be worthwhile on the surgery? Not a second diagnostic test, but just an opinion? Guest guest
Debby. thank God you didn't suggest a second diagnosis, I dont believe I could stand that.. my back has hurt so bad this weekend, I can only tell you they have awaken a sleeping monster. A second opinion wouldn't be out of line at all, I will look into that.. but if a discography has to be done by a different person, forget it.. Guest guest
Hi, . When I mentioned second opinion, I was thinking (rather fuzzily and sleepily) about whether the particular surgery was the best way to address this. It sounds, unfortunately, like you definitely have the condition. And more diagnostic procedures are definitely a no-no! I don't know much about the options for disc problems, although I have heard that there is controversy among doctors about whether surgery is the best way to address this kind of condition and, if so, what kind of surgery. I think someone else posted a note about whether there are newer options or different types of surgery. We learned with my son that sometimes doctors are very eager to do a particular surgery-- but the results are not always best for the patient, especially with underlying CNS problems. But it sounds like you have some good doctors to help explore the options. Good luck with it--I'm hoping there's a procedure that will reliably (and painlessly!) fix the problem. You definitely deserve that after living through the diagnostics! Hugs, Debby

Guest guest
Indianajoe1, is your name too? Just wondering. I had the discogram already, it was painful, and yes it was to look at the disk above and below the noted abnormal disk. They did give me sedation, it just didn't work.. Thanks for the information though you are right in your explaination of it. Hugs, P > > > > > > OMG, I just had the most excruciating procedure in my entire > life > > > today.
