Guest guest
I need advice desperately. I have had IBS (irritable bowel syndrome - Nervous Diahrea) for some years. Recently due to my ballooning weight, my personal feelings about myself and stress, the IBS has gotten alot worse. I am scared to go out of the house, and i hate driving. I saw my gastroenterologist today and he feels that I shouldn't have BPD/DS as it will probably make my IBS ten times worse. Oh the other hand I feel that if I lose some of the weight that it may make the IBS a little better, even if at the begining it is worse. My doctor has put me on Anti-depressants to try and calm the panic attacks but they arent working and I am not happy about being medicated. Oh please someone out there tell me what you think, I feel like my dream of losing weight is slipping out of my fingers, but I certainly don't want to have BPD/DS and find that I am worse off. Oh What am I going to do??? Sobs Tracey Tracey.... I don't think that is necessarily true. I also have IBS, to the point where I had to always be places with a bathroom, never drove in traffic because god forbid I got stuck and my stomach acted up. I am having this done and my dr didn't say anything along those lines. I will say since I moved and got some things done that reduced my stress...its become almost a non issue in recent time, but I still have days where I want to stay home. I would question that..maybe some people here that have had it will be able to give you advice.... ~~* AJ *~~ BMI 58 NW Washington Medical DR Heap, Richland WA Working on 1st appeal

Guest guest
Hi , This is not medical advice just a few suggestions from another patient. Those antidepressants shouldn't be the first medicatioin if the problem is anxiety. Ask about klonopin or small amount of xanax or something in that family. Only use them for short time. Long term they are addictive. Since you said you don't like being on drugs you might want to try KAVA. Usualy in liquid dropper bottle. Follow directions. I would use few drops under tounge. Tastes lousy but it really does calm you down. Valerian might also help. Chamomile tea is worth a try also. But the KAVA is best and works fastest. You might add lots of fiber to your diet. That helped me with IBS in the past. Not a cure but a big help. Also, I dont know if you have blood sugar problems but cutting out sugar and cutting down on starches;breads, pasta, etc, will help the anxiety. It has for me and its' certainly worth a shot. Now these suggestions don't take away the real stressors you currently have in your life but they can make them easier to deal with. I'm preop so I won't address the D/S stuff. Others will, I'm sure. Good Luck, Will
Guest guest
I respectfully disagree with you, Will. All the SSRI antidepressants and Serzone/Nefazodone are FDA approved for use in anxiety and are often prescribed just for that purpose. I like Paxil/Paroxetine and Serzone/Nefazodone best for anxiety. Interestingly, many of my colleagues prefer prescribing Effexor for anxiety. I haven't had such success with that for my patients. Xanax and Klonopin are extremely addictive within less than a month. Yes, some folks use them wisely and without abuse for years. Others are abusing within weeks. For good anxiety control the medication has to be taken routinely, not on an " as needed " or PRN basis. The catecholamines that produce anxiety are deactivated in about 20 minutes-- faster than the meds can work. These medications (benzos) also can cause confusion, impair judgment, and make depression worse. Combined with alcohol they are deadly. They can be lifesavers for occasional use. Anxiety is also very responsive to non medication interventions. And I totally agree that there are many things we can do to relieve anxiety. Tracey, some folks report good results with SSRIs for IBS. Others complain it is worse. Hope yours is better. in Seattle ----- Original Message ----- > Hi , > This is not medical advice just a few suggestions from another patient. Guest guest
I am always nervous about replying to people's questions because I feel like I am no expert, and never want to steer anyone wrong. But in this instance, I can tell you I have had a similar experience. When I told Dr. Pomp during my pre-op consultation that I have, in the past, been told by my PCP that I have a touch of irritable bowel syndrome, Dr. P made me have a colonoscopy along with the usual endoscopy. He said that if it is just IBS, then it would be okay, but if it was actually the more serious Inflamed Bowel Disease, then you could not have the BPD/DS. Because DSers have a tendency to have diarrhea anyway post-op, it would be a mistake. The Colonoscopy was to rule out H Pylori bacteria if I remember correctly. I had my surgery 6 months ago. I had terrible diarrhea for 6 weeks after the surgery. The only thing that helped it was Cholysteramine (a prescription for high cholesterol that has a side effect of causing constipation in people with normal GI tracts). I still take it now, but only 1/2 a packet every night instead of a whole packet (you mix it with OJ). While I still have diarrhea occasionally, it is not worse than it was before the surgery, in fact it is better. Tracey, I feel your anguish. I was sick with worry that the colonoscopy might show that I couldn't have the surgery, because I knew that would be my death sentence. At 386 pounds I could barely even stand for more than 5 minutes at a time. Walking a block was a nightmare of shortness of breath and sweating like a pig, even in 50 degree weather. Diabetes and high blood pressure were in their early stages, and my knees were a ruin. I feel tears pricking the back of my eyes right this very moment as I think about it, and think about you and know what you are feeling. And I thank God every day for giving me Dr. Pomp, and letting me come through the surgery with flying colors. I have lost 118 pounds in 6 months. I feel happy for the first time in so many years that I thought there was something wrong with me until I realized that's what it was: Happiness. I told my sister I didn't know what to make of it, had no experience with it, what do people do with these random feelings of happiness that hit you at inexplicable moments and cause you to smile foolishly for no reason? As much as I hate to tell another person what to do, I so want you to feel this feeling. I don't know where you are, or who your surgeon is, or if you even have one yet. Your surgeon needs to be comfortable that you are the right candidate for him, but you need him to be the right surgeon for you. You can email me if you want to, and we can talk on the phone. My email is janicedrew@.... Best wishes, Janice Drew 386/268 BPD/DS 11/29/00 Dr. Alfons Pomp, Mt. Sinai in NYC > Hi Everyone > I need advice desperately. Guest guest
It's odd because I have gone through so many different medical issues in the past and its only now that I realize that I am not the only one. I have noticed though that fatty and oily things are what get my IBS really working overtime like yesterday for example, so now I am trying to stay away from the oily and fatty and I hope that works. Thank for the support it feels nice to know that someone is there to listen. Also for me I'm lactose intolerant. That makes a huge difference if I stay away from dairy. And yes...fats were my enemy also...LOL Its nice to know I wasn't alone...sure wish I'd had a computer back 5 years ago... ~~* AJ *~~ BMI 58 NW Washington Medical DR Heap, Richland WA Working on 1st appeal
Guest guest
Lisbeth IBS is such a common problem but I honestly never knew so many people were afflicted. I have opened up to my sister in law and best friend about my problem (both whom i have know for in excess of 10 years) and both revealed that they have had a similar problem that they have now under control, and yet it has never come up in conversation I know that talking about bowel problems is certainly yucky but just the fact that everyone here has opened up to me so freely and shared their point of views and feelings makes me incredibly grateful.
