Guest guest
Meli and All, Not much details to give about my ordeal. A little background for those new here might be in order. I discovered the DS by accident, back last August, when I was researching Bariatric Treatment Centers and the RNY. Something just told me that that wasn't what I wanted. I found Dr. Mustafa Hares at Obesity.Com and made an appointment with, Jackie, his program coordinator. To make a long story short, I immediately canceled my surgery, which was 3 day away. I started attending Jackie's support meetings, through Bloomfield Bariatrics, which is the name of Jackie's clinic. What a great group of people. They made me welcome at once. As the weeks followed, I was sure that the Duodenalswitch was for me. Dr. Hares and I had an appointment at North Oakland Medical Center on January 14, 2001, for surgery. I was very happy. Just a few days before surgery, the hospital canceled all wls saying it was not cost effective enough for them. Dr. Hares was without a hospital to perform surgery. And I was left hanging. I didn't feel like changing doctors. Dr. Hares has a "way" with his patients. I can't explain it...something just clicked. I wasn't going to change! I stuck it out and patiently waited...waited...and waited for what seemed like forever. During this time, I joined this list, did some more research and REALLY thought about what I was going to do. I believe that it really prepared me for what was to come. May 15, I had my surgery at St. s-Oakland, the new facility that Jackie and Dr. Hares have found. What a wonderful hospital! Full of caring, sincere staff members, right down to the nurses aids! It seemed the whole hospital wanted to participate. I felt like a celebrity. Everyone was very attentive. I was especially pleased with the nursing staff--they were exceptional! I woke after about 4 hours of surgery. Dr. Hares had to remove scar tissue from previous surgeries, which took more time than usual. I was up sitting at the edge of the bed then in the chair by that evening. I started walking the next day. The Chief of Surgery, Dr. Fields, stopped by to see me. The Chief of Anesthesiology came every day to make sure I was doing well. Everything went perfect. I went home on Friday, May 18. As of last Friday, I had lost 25 pounds! Tomorrow I have my first post-op appointment. We shall see... That's it....that's my story...so far.... Patience paid off.
