Does anyone have a good source for good quality almond meal to make almond milk?Trader Joes.yeah -though of course, you don't need to start from almond meal - you can start from whole almonds - which you can now get locally at the costco at 116th - they'recheaper than TJs for the whole almonds. Though TJs is more convenient for you. Can't wait til the TJs opens on the Upper West Side on 72nd sometime in 2010. Mara

Mara,

I'm looking for a source for my friend in the city.

Not sure of the quality of almonds at cosco's and f they pasteurize?

What have you found to be the cheapest?

TJ's is also opening up in Chelsea where that huge Barne's and Nobles used to

be... Supposed to be a massively sprawling space.. the one on 14th gets so busy

it's not fun to shop there.

Don't they all pasteurize now? I thought it was the law or something.

TJs for regular meal, I use Honeywell for white flour meal, and

costco for whole almonds.

Yeah - that line snakes around the entire store unless you are there

at a

really off hour.

There are some organics that aren't pasteurized (imports) as many " organic raw "

nuts from the US (Cali) are not really raw even if it says that on the label.

The ones sourced from Italy are not pasteurized at all.

Well, I don't know that I am the pickiest person about this kind of

thing.

Yeah - they're fine. And reasonable.

On the nut aisle. I haven't been to 116th yet - but they all

seem fairly

consistent.

When I did the almond/nut kick I did bulk buying with a couple of people and it

came out really affordable!

I do this with numerous products like coconut stuffs, celtic sea salt, himalayan

sea salt, organic green tea

all kindsa cool stuff.

I am thinking of trying almond milk (I am 2 weeks into SCD), and Blanched almond

milk is suggested at Stage 1 of pecanbread.

I bought almond fluor from Central Market (its an organic store). Can I use that

to make almond milk by grinding with water and filtering?

Yes, it's very easy. I put it in the blender for 10 minutes. And

filter with

a thin dish towel. Cheesecloth *won't* work, IMO.

And it's good in coffee. And delicious on its own. Add vanilla

(check to make sure

it has no sugar - they have an inexpensive one at TJs) for extra tasty

almond milk.

You can also get nut milk bags off of places like amazon.com. I've found them

to work REALLY well and as long as you clean them right after using they last a

long time. One of them helped a lot when I flared and my bf accidentally broke

my juicer. He ended up putting fruit in a vitamix and then using the nutmilk

bag to strain it so I could still have some juice.
