Guest guest
Hi All, I have been reading a lot about B-12 (seems as controversial as the protien shakes) and I am curious now about something. How many of the post ops here are taking their sublingal B-12 by Bariatic Advantage more than 2xs a week? I am reading that there are those post ops out there taking 1000mcg every day. Some are taking it more than once a day? Beth, the nutritionist at Richmond, assured me that taking it only 2 xs a week was just fine. Just curious if anyone's labs are low on B-12 now? I have to get my labs done today for that 12 week post op appt next week. Thanks, Kay

Guest guest
Hi B 12 is Water soluble that means its not stored in the body. what your Body cant use at the time you take it you pee out un like A,D, E, F are fat soluble and you can get too much it gets stored in the body. your B Vits are also used up in stress. you can take at least 1 a day some times I even take 2 in the morning. Just for a boost. don't take at night it may keep you awake.Hope this helps..... Big Hugs Caryl Where's the controversy with B12? I take B12 daily, because I load up a few weeks of vitamin packets. If every day's packet has a B12 in it, where's the harm? I don't use Bariatric Advantage _anything_ since I can find equivalents a lot cheaper. I can swallow regular pills with no problems, so don't need (or like) chewables. I also admit to being suspicious of special "bariatric" formula anything. I figure they have just figured out yet another way to sell us the same stuff, but crank up the price because we're desparate! Guest guest
Thanks for your input Rose. I was only concerned because I have heard people having complications later on, like a year out, not getting enough b-12 and the labs can change drasticly from a few months out to 6 months out. I just wanted to prevent the shot if at all possible...I know I had surgery and I am a big baby about needles! How are you feeling now? Energy good and food staying down? Guest guest
Kay, I do 500mg of B12 every day. Considering the seriousness of a b12 deficiency, better safe than sorry. Guest guest
Eleanor, lol, I can see your point though and it is well taken. I was only doing those as a place to start from. I knew that I would switch over at some point. I can't wait until I can swallow more normal sized pills again, I don't like chewing these calcium pills AT all. Blah! When did you notice you could start on normal sized pills again? Do you take yours in gel form still? I heard the hard pills are still hard to break down? Thanks, Kay > > > Hi All, I have been reading a lot about B-12 (seems as controversial > > as the protien shakes) and I am curious now about something. Guest guest
I'm with you, Eleanor. What's the big deal about B12? Start out taking the recommended dosage. Watch your labs. If your levels fall too low, take more. This isn't rocket science. (Sorry - LOL!) You can't overdose on B12. It's a water-soluble vitamin, so your body will just pee out whatever it can't use, so take it every day if you want. My last labs showed my B12 level was off the charts (>1200 pg/mL - The " normal " range is >200.) Guest guest
Kay, I've been taking pill form (I hated those darn chewables, especially the calcium) for about 6 weeks now (my surgery was about a month before yours). Swallowing them doesn't bother me at all. I take another bariatric type vitamin that is in capsule form. My sister uses these vitamins to this day (she is 3-1/2 years out) and her labs have always been fabulous. No more expensive that the ones I got from bariatric advantage. Guest guest
I don't remember when I started with regular pills, but I think it was within a couple of months. I had purchased some liquid multi-vitamins, but it was SO nasty if I swallowed it, I knew I was gonna have to taste it again when it came back up! I think it was some sort of pineapple-orange flavor. I did try cutting pills for a while, but found that the sharp edges made it harder for me to swallow the pills than if I just swallowed them whole. I do not generally like chewables, since they tend to be much bigger and more expensive, and taste nasty. I'd rather just swallow a pill! I have found a couple of tricks. When I take a pill, I hold it in my mouth for a few seconds, until it starts getting a bit slimey. Much easier to swallow that way. I take very few things in gel form. The only one in fact is the Colace (generic actually). The oily gels I can't count on absorbing. Most of my supplements are large white capsules (which all look identical!), but I do also take a couple of large pills, such as my multi and my glucosamine. The other tip I learned is how to tell if the pills will break down or not. Take something like a shot glass and put a puddle of spit in the bottom. Drop in a pill and wait a few minutes. Take a look at the pill. If it's starting to break down, or if it crumbles when you poke at it gently with a fork, it will break down just fine. If it's still hard as a rock, it is less likely to dissolve in your gut. I know a lot of docs say go ahead with pills that are smaller than a standard M&M almost immediately after release from the hospital post-op, but that is probably a case of Your Mileage May Vary. We each seem to find out what works for us. Hope that helps! specialkmix2000 wrote: > When did you notice you could start on normal sized pills again? Do > you take yours in gel form still? Guest guest
Crankypants?!? I LIKE that! I would slightly disagree with you here Tim. I would tend to take more B12 than twice a week, because it's just too easy for it to crash. When it nosedives, it can do it fast and hard, and the results can be permanent and devastating. The other issue is with the " normal " range. It seems most of Europe considers normal to be much higher than the labs in the US do. I know far too many people who can FEEL the difference when their levels fall below 600. These tend to be people who, for reasons unknown, cannot absorb ANY oral form, including the sublingual, so have to do shots. After a B12 shot, they feel the improvement immediately. If the level is falling, and gets to 200, reversing the downward trend can be very tough. One of those instances where I'd much rather take more rather than less. It's just too hard to build the levels back up once they have crashed! Hm, I think it's time for me to go take my morning vites! Uncle Timmy wrote: > I'm with you, Eleanor. Guest guest
Tina, Do you mind sending me the link to the vits you are getting? Are they a combo one that includes Magnesium or just the calcium by itself? Thanks! Guest guest
Those are great tips Eleanor!! Thanks so much! I love the tip on the dissolving of the pill. Your education on this process is wonderful! Thanks again, Kay I think you already sent me the link to vitalady, is this where you are getting the suppliments from as well? > > > When did you notice you could start on normal sized pills again?
