Guest guest
I am taking a prescription strength iron supplement twice a day -- I was slightly anemic before surgery. To take it on an empty stomach, I think I'm supposed to take it at least 1 hour before eating or two or more hours after eating. Do I have those times right? Lori B. Guest guest
Hi Lori: Your timing for taking the iron is good however make sure that they are not oil based. Dr. A would not let me take iron supplements prescription as they were oil based and we all know just how much oil we absorb! Instead he prescribed iron infusions once a week for 10 weeks, I have 5 more to go, They are easy I bob into the hospital they set up an IV with a butterfly needle, I have yet to feel it go in and they use the same arm every week because any and all veins in my right arm have moved to another state! LOL Anyway it takes about 15 minutes and I am off, apparently this new 15 minute process is really new because when I went the first time they said it would take an hour and when the iron came up the info with it said 15 minutes so we shall see how this works. I just thought I would mention what Dr. A had said about the oil based iron pills, the pharmacist should be able to tell you if you tell him why you want to know. Guest guest
My med info is to take between meals..(your times fit the bill for that) but if it upsets stomach, take right before meals and consider increasing dose if absorption is a problem. Don't take with milk or antacids. Eggs milk products, chocolate, and caffeine interfere with absorption. Don't take with Calcium.. but will be better absorbed if you take it with Vit C. That's all my brain can recall at the moment. in Seattle ----- Original Message ----- > I am taking a prescription strength iron supplement twice a day -- I was > slightly anemic before surgery. Guest guest
Yes Lori. Also make sure you take a vitamin C with it. It helps with absorption. I am now taking 3 iron pills. My iron was 49 and they want it at 50. Ellen(Pam
Guest guest
<<< >>> Yes! And, some iron pills come WITH the extra C! The stuff I'm taking, Chromagen Forte, is a liquid iron capsule (not time released or anything) and it has built-in vitamin C. I just pop one of those babies (well, really two a day LOL) and I got the vitamin C for extra absorption! all the best, lap ds with gallbladder removal January 25, 2001 four months post-op and still feelin' fab! preoP: 307 lbs/bmi 45 (5'9 " ) now: 251 lbs (and still goin' down!
