Absorb plus

Hi ,

Before I decided on SCD, I spent way too much money reading about and buying

different items. I tried Absorb plus. I still have the bottle, but I will

probably throw it out. I was pre-SCD at this point, but I made a smoothy with

the stuff. I had major D the next day. Absorb plus is full of maltodextrine. One

serving has 62 grams of carbs. This is great for gaining weight, I suppose. For

me, that was way too much of a carb load at one time, and my body just put it

out. Maltodextrine is illegal.

There are several approaches to IBD, and I'm glad that Jini Patel's works for

her, and hopefully many others are also helped. I also resisted the work

involved with SCD and tried short cuts. I found, through trial and error ( and

money ) that the diets don't mix. Using Absorb plus is not compatible with SCD-

it will undo it. Eventually I decided on SCD, as much work as it was in the

beginning, but finally feeling well is more than worth it.

For me, it was only SCD that stopped the D. Like you, weight was pouring off me.

Once the D stopped, I started gaining my weight back. The only reason I'm not

gaining now is because, at 5'4'', I don't want to gain any more, but if I really

ate all I wanted on SCD (nut butter by the barrel- love that stuff) I would.

That's what I thought. My problem is that after 5 weeks on scd I'm still having

bad D. I've lost 20 pounds and seem to tolerate nothing. I can't have eggs,

cheese, beef is to fatty. No veggies or fruit. Even watered down grape juice

gives me problems. I simply can't live (literally) on chicken soup. I can't even

seem to have the carrots. Yogurt is also questionable. Since starting this diet

my D has bcome worse and worse. I never had these problems pre-scd. I'm about to

go into panic mode on my weight and I'm gonna end up on stronger meds. My

pentasa just comes out looking like pentasa. I've started over on the intro diet

twice in 5 weeks. Both times made the D worse and I never recover.

Please see my post about gaining weight.

This stuff is whey protein, which Elaine particularly disliked, because

she said that it was a poor grade of protein.

I would highly recommend taking LDN -- as soon as you possibly can.

Sometimes the diet needs some help, and LDN will provide it.

I'm wondering what foods you do tolerate. I know you are wondering if SCD is

helping, but if the foods you mention are giving you trouble, then non-SCD foods

should also be hard to tolerate.

SCD was not designed to replace medication. Some people, after feeling well on

SCD decide to stop meds on their own. If you do need some meds at the moment, it

is not necessarily a failure of SCD. We do what we need to do to heal.

My own journey to SCD began when I was not tolerating any foods at all. I was

pretty much living on Boost and Pedialyte. SCD foods were an addition for me,

and I slowly added them one at a time. I never felt that I gave up something I

tolerated before.

I know you are panicking, and I would believe nobody here wants you to suffer.

The very first thing I did- diet wise, before SCD was to go gluten free and

lactose free. I thought those two things would be the most difficult for my gut

to handle. I read BTVC several times, and also several other diet books before

committing to SCD. You asked about going off the diet at some point, and I'm not

even thinking on those terms, but I would imagine that would be a very slow

process as well, with gluten/lactose being the last things to add, but I

seriously doubt I would stop SCD as I do feel better on it- now.

I think we would all encourage you to stay on SCD and hopefully others would add

suggestions, but nobody here expects you to starve or be really sick. Many have

used a short course of prednisone, or LDN, or whatever has worked to help heal

in addition to SCD.
