Guest guest
I have been lurking around this forum for a while and now I have a question. I was diagnosed with Sarcoidosis (lung and liver involved) in the mid 1970s and for the most part it has not aggravated me too much. Have been through the prednisone routine, skin rashes, and crusty pimples on the eyelids. It's been very quiet for a number of years now. But I have a new pulmonologist and he has prescribe Advair because the shortness of breath has more or less increased and he says I have secondary asthma (sarcoid related). After reading about Advair on the net and also reading the inclosed patient information brochure, I am really too afraid to use it. Too many warnings, etc. Does anyone out there know anything about this drug or have you used it or know anyone who has? Terry
Guest guest
Terry, I have been on Advair for about four years. It has done wonders for my asthma control. I used100/50 until about a month ago when it was changed to 500/100. I have never had a problem with it. Good luck. Barb J. Guest guest
Terry, I've used Advair and Albuterol inhalers, as well as Rhinocort for nasal congestion. Albuterol is a fast acting vaso-dilator-- and opens up the airways when they are constricted by asthma and the mucus. It increases your heart rate-- and so they say if you're using it more than 2x a week-- you're not on the right Asthma control medicine. Advair is an inhaled cortisteroid-- and for me, it just seems to give me a good case of thrush. (However, I have friends who have asthma, without sarcoidosis- and they swear by it.) Rhinocort is a nasal inhaled steroid-- and brings down the inflammation and swelling of the nasal passages. For me, I've found that Sinus Rinse-- works even better. Right now, the Ragweed and Walnuts and Almonds are in full harvest- and the pollen from them is bad. The husks seem to hold alot of mold and fungus as they split open-- and my body hates it. My Rheumi, who is also an allergist and immunologist- recommended the Sinus Rinse and Ocean Nasal saline to use thru the day -- it washes the dust and pollen out of the nose before it becomes a problem, and my sinus allergies along with the upper respiratory stuff has decreased tremendously. The benefit is that it's totally ph balanced, and is normal saline --so no burning and no yeasties! Would I try Advair again-- yep, and I will probably be on it all winter- because we heat exclusively with wood heat. I'll use the S.R. and Ocean along with it-- so that I don't get so dried out. Remember that all the meds have side effects. And now with all the stuff about drugs and the scary things that someone got-- it's a huge longshot. (I also know that getting multi-system sarc was a longshot. . ) However, if it will help improve the quality of life-- your personal comfort-- go for it. Guest guest
All - Thanks for your replies. I am giving Advair a try - it has been 3 days so far and I do notice my breathing is improving. The nurse in the office said to be sure to rinse my mouth real well and brush my teeth after each use. I talked to the pulmonologist again and he explained to me how they do these trials and come up with all these warnings. It's still a bit scary, but because I don't have what he called 'classic' asthma but sarcoid-related asthma, it is necessary for me to have it for now. Believe me, I will keep on top of this. He also said my chest x-ray was 'impressive'. UMMmmmmm....
