.. It is strange that I did NOT have narrow angle glaucoma couple of weeks ago when flare began and then on Tuesday I did. I'm wondering if the sarcoid flare could have caused this? The flare did start in my left eye (never went to my right eye but then never does) and then hit my joints, etc. The glaucoma is bilateral. I also have mild cataracts probably r/t to the oral pred use for 2+ yrs. Super scary is that I almost had general anesthesia for the AICD without knowing about the glaucoma which could have blinded me per the eye surgeon.

The sarcoidosis flare I'm sure caused it. also, the changes in medication probably added insult to injury.

One other thing to remember-- even if you have "red eyes" STAY AWAY FROM VISINE drops. They have an antihistimine that shrinks the blood vessels, so your eyes look less inflammed, but actually end up causing other problems with your eyes.

If you treat the "dry eyes"- you'll find that you won't have the "red eye" problems. Since the cornea requires hydration- it's a must to keep your vision healthy.

The cataracts we seem to experience in our 40's and 50's, rather than the general public who start facing cataracts in their 70's, is caused by the prednisone. Not only does prednisone cause early cataracts-- which is the lens of our eyes calcifying-- the prednisone also hardens the arteries in our bodies.

I realize that for many prednisone is a godsend, but long-term use is not only hard on the entire body, they now know that when we've been on high dose steroids, then weaned off-- if the sarcoidosis does come back-- the effect prednisone will have a second time around is less. So if you've had a remission and then the sarcoidosis comes back, or other signs of more than one single body system is involved--- it's time to take all the info you have in with you to your MD's- and look at the alternatives.

I have a few of those sites in the LINKS-- and if you look in the ARCHIVES-- you'll find many articles and links that explain everything from bone involvement to sarcoidosis-induced arthritis to muscle, brain, liver involvement, etc. (I hope someday to be able to start getting alot of those into the LINKS--in the meantime, I'd recommend that each of us bookmark the sites listed in our own computers, so that we have easy access to them.)
