Guest guest
I'm reading " the new eating right for a bad gut " by Scala. His arguments and science are every bit as convincing as those found in BTVS. The funny thing is that nearly every sentence is exactly opposite of the dietary theories put forth in BTVC!!! Has anyone else read this book? What are your thoughts?

Has anyone else read this book? What are your thoughts? Haven't read it. Do remember a lady from the old Long Island List who said it put her in the hospital. I ate the opposite of SCD for years... and just kept getting sicker and sicker and sicker. I have had more success on SCD than any other treatment for my UC. I get frustrated with my limited diet. I have even seen a dietition and part of me was hoping that she would discount SCD so I could eat some new things but she felt the science behind the diet was sound. It takes time to work and I still get frustrated and even cheat a little but I know without this diet I would have had J-pouch surgery by now. Guest guest
Yes, I've read this book and just about every one I could get my hands on. Many of them contradicted the others. Some were about restricting fiber and eating lots of white bread and cream of wheat. Others suggested lots of fiber- Metamucil. I did the white bread/cream of rice, and did not feel better. Then I went gluten free which helped a little. I intitially resisted SCD at first because of the work involved, but I finally bought a Yogourmet and began the diet. Only when I went fully SCD did I start to notice improvement. Like you, I went on a trial, figuring I had nothing to lose and everything to gain. Thankfully it works for me. I have no desire to go back to my former way of eating (well.... maybe a giant Starbucks with everything in it- only in my dreams) PJ > > I'm reading " the new eating right for a bad gut " by Scala. Guest guest
Several years ago, I debated between that book and BTVC. I ended up (wrongly) choosing " Eating Right " due to 2 things: 1. I never liked nuts, and (wrongly) thought almond flour would be yucky. 2. I kept reading things that said something like, " Eat one illegal cookie and you're back to square 1, even if you've been perfect the previous 6 months. " It was totally depressing to think that something so small would ruin all your hard work. As a result, I chose not to get BTVC. If only I hadn't believed these 2 things, I would have started healing much sooner then I did. Eating Right did have some good ideas (like don't eat sugar), but it just wasn't enough. I donated it just a couple months ago to a book drive. Holly Crohn's SCD 12/01/08 > > I'm reading " the new eating right for a bad gut " by Scala. Guest guest
I donated my " other books on diet and gut " collection to our local library, so anyone could read them without having to buy them. I was done with them once I got into SCD. I think having access to information and making an informed decision is a good thing. I was looking for common ground between the diets, and although some were very different, a common theme emerged from some of them- the gut bacteria theme. BTVC was the only one that gave details about this, and it resonated with me- and led me to my decision to do it. PJ > > > > I'm reading " the new eating right for a bad gut " by Scala. Guest guest
This is a good question. Taking a poll to see just which books each of us SCD'ers have donated since starting the diet. I know I got rid of a whole bunch of them that I realize were utter garbage.. Still impressed though with ideas from Nourishing Traditions and stuff like that. Guest guest
, I never read the book. I have read some stuff online about it. At the end of the day it is about personal choice and what resonates. Sometimes we have to go through hell before we submit and hand ourselves over to the SCD. SCD is a commitment and it works. I did the low fiber high carb thing and I regret every blessed moment of it. I mean, of course I am the sum of my experiences of my past in some ways but with that said.. I could of alleviated a lot of suffering. With all of that said, we are all individuals and what may work for you may not work for me and vice versa. Also, in my mind.. it's like who wouldn't just want to eat whatever and live life? I sure know that I would. Of course I am thankful for the diet.. but could you imagine not having to weed through the noise all the time! Or just picking up lunch somewhere? I can now eat out and be completely fine. It takes work but we get there. Jodi > > I'm reading " the new eating right for a bad gut " by Scala. His arguments and science are every bit as convincing as those found in BTVS. Guest guest
I am also impressed by the thought and research that goes into the decision to go on SCD. We are not a group choosing something on blind faith. Most of us arrived here through reading and experience. I don't have a PHD in biochemistry like Elaine did, so I don't dispute her decisions, however the fact that we do talk about the diet and think about it, and ask questions is a tribute to the mindset of the people on this board.
