Guest guest
Hi, I got diagnosed with Crohn's over the summer. As soon as I got my diagnosis, I started looking up info. on nutritional impact on Crohn's and came across the SCD. I am currently on Remicade and Methotrexate, which has thankfully put me into remission. I have slowly weaned foods out of my diet that weren't SCD compliant, and now I'm just about there except for my supplements, which I'm pretty sure are not SCD complaint, and flaxseed. Other than that, my food choices follow SCD, unless I order something at a restaurant and it unknowingly has an illegal. I want to do SCD in case my meds stop working, and also, because I would like to have a baby next year, and I'm not sure about staying on Remicade during that time. I have a few questions, if you don't mind me asking- 1. What types of vitamins are SCD compliant? If I want to take a prenatal, are there any that are OK? 2. What probiotics are SCD compliant? 3. Do you guys go out to eat? I usually order chicken, but I suppose even if i ask for it plain, it may have been injected with a broth that was an illegal. Do I really need to stop eating out? It's not that I'll miss the food, but I will miss the social aspect when people invite me out. 4. This is the question that most concerns me- I don't notice any difference when I have eaten something illegal, or a lot of something illegal. Does anyone else have this " issue " ? Therefore, how do I know when may be the right time to try and introduce illegals? I know they say that you should wait a year or two before ever getting off the diet and then try and reintroduce other foods, but if I'm not affected by them, how do I know if they're aggravating my Crohn's? I'd appreciate your input, please. Thank you!
Guest guest
Freeda vitamins are legal- don't know if there are prenatal ones, but if you take their B supplement along with them, you will get enough folic acid I believe- which is the main one for women considering pregnancy. SCD is an all or none commitment for at least 2 years. You can't eat illegals, even if they don't bother you. The purpose is to decrease the bad bugs in the gut, and even a little bit will feed them. Medication can mask the effects of eating illegals, so you won't know. I would stop the flaxseed. GI pro health sells legal probiotics. I get most of mine from the yogurt we make. I think there are other sources. Lucy's kitchen shop, digestive wellness- all sell vitamins, and other legal products. I avoid chicken at restaurants. I usually go for unmarinated steak and plain cooked veggies. I talk to the chef ahead of time so I know items aren't pre seasoned and what is safe to eat. I also chose to meet friends over coffee (where I order tea) which takes the food issue away from socializing. SCD is a very healthy way to eat. I hope some younger women who have had children, or plan to while on SCD would chime in here to advise you. (I'm over 50 ) PJ > > Hi, > > I got diagnosed with Crohn's over the summer. Guest guest
Congrats for going on the diet!I used to manage a restaurant so a few tips for eating out...EVERYTHING is usually seasoned. But, I would often get requests for people that have allergens, etc. 1. As crazy as it sounds, tell them you have an allergy. Some people will hear "diet" and not take is seriously...I have seen people getting served things that they did not want because they said they just didn't like it or were on a diet. When you say allergy, the manager does not want to be help responsible for an allergic reaction. 2. As if they have a gluten free menu. Most things on this menu can be modified and it will give you a good idea of what things to look at on the menu.3. We always kept fresh chicken and steaks in the back that have not been marinated yet. On many occasions, I would go get a new piece that has not been contaminated for people with allergies just to make sure there was no problem. 4. Ask them to cook it on a sizzle plate or seperate from the rest of the food. Like people with glueten allergies, the food cannot touch the grill, etc because illegal ingridents are also placed directly onto it. 5. Find a small group of restaurants that can accomidate your needs. We had many repeat guests because we were willing to cater to their needs. 6. If you are going to a new place and don't know if you will be able to eat anything...eat before and have something like a house salad at dinner.Hope this helps!Freeda vitamins are legal- don't know if there are prenatal ones, but if you take their B supplement along with them, you will get enough folic acid I believe- which is the main one for women considering pregnancy.SCD is an all or none commitment for at least 2 years. Others have gotten them from Digestive Wellness, or ordered them direct from Freeda. Not all Freeda supplements are SCD-legal -- only the ones marked that way. >> 2. What probiotics are SCD compliant? << Acidophilus and s. boulardii are the two probiotics which are permitted. Acidophilus has a long history of being helpful to people with gut issues. S. boulardii is a friendly yeast which, as I understand it, " eats candida for lunch. " Many, many well-meaning health-oriented sorts will recommend dozens of other probiotics. I don't recommend them. I'm a past expert in the art of sticking my finger in a candle flame to see if the flame is really hot. If it was possible to make a mistake on SCD in the first year or two, I think I managed them all, and even some Elaine just shook her head over. >> 3. Do you guys go out to eat? It's not that I'll miss the food, but I will miss the social aspect when people invite me out. << Absolutely! I live in New Orleans! How could I manage NOT to go out to eat? I eat mainly at small local restaurants where they are less likely to have everything pre-packaged with illegal additives like the chain restaurants. These restaurants are usually very helpful. (Found a new burger place in Metairie, called Phil's Grill which has " burgers in a bowl " -- that is, burgers served on different kinds of greens. These folks have bison, beef, tuna, lamb, and even ALLIGATOR burgers! Most of their sauces and stuff are anathema, but I bring my own shredded cheese and dressing, and it's good.) I have an insulated bag which I can pop cold packs into. I keep SCD mini-muffins and shredded cheese, and other stuff in the freezer. I always have my favorite Hurricane Dressing made up and ready. I often have remoulade sauce or Caesar Salad dressing or Ranch dressing on hand. Makes it easy to set up my food bag with whatever I need for a given restaurant. Last year, I went to a charity auction which was serving a meal. I consulted with them beforehand and we determined that nothing which was being served (with the exception of a tossed salad) was legal, so we agreed I wouldn't pay the meal fee, and would bring my own dinner -- which I did: a steak, mock mashed potatoes, some brie spinach left from Thanksgiving, and some leftover cranberry-apple-pecan compote as my dessert. I did bring salad dressing and cheese and ate the prepared salad. I have also attended conferences where meal functions are part of the events. If I can talk to the chefs before hand, I have them prepare a special meal. If not, I bring my husband as my designated eater (he eats the conference provided meal) and I just bring my own food in my food bag. >> 4. This is the question that most concerns me- I don't notice any difference when I have eaten something illegal, or a lot of something illegal. Does anyone else have this " issue " ? I know they say that you should wait a year or two before ever getting off the diet and then try and reintroduce other foods, but if I'm not affected by them, how do I know if they're aggravating my Crohn's? << First of all, since you are on Remicade and methotrexate, you may be getting a masking effect -- but rest assured, the illegals can feed the bad bacteria, Remicade or no. I would do SCD with 100% fanaticism, no cheating, for a minimum of a year after you wean off the Remicade. I am not a doctor and this sort of thing should be done working with a doctor. I know the idea of avoiding all illegals sounds horrific and difficult, especially for weeks, months, or years ahead. I think if someone had told me I would still be eating this way eight years later and enjoying it, I'd've told them they were crazy. I was a starch-o-holic, and I just wanted to get well so I could get back to having rice and pasta. Well... I'm well, as far as my gut issues are concerned, and, funny thing, rice and pasta no longer interests me. Some people are horrified at the possibility of a life sentence on SCD. I don't see it as a " sentence. " I see it as an opportunity. SCD has given me my life back. SCD has put ME in control of my guts, something I didn't have for around 25 years. SCD shocked the socks off my surgeons last year when I had cancer surgery -- both admitted they didn't have the commitment to eat as healthy as I was. And, they gave me all these lines of, " It's not IF you have... it's how much. " How much wound separation,. How much infection. How much this or that or the other thing. And I had NONE of it. Both were considering trying to come up with a pilot program for patients to eat SCD, and then decided they would never be able to get people to commit to something like SCD. Think about that one: faced with a killer disease, people would rather eat JUNK than give themselves a fighting chance. BTW, if you're wanting to get pregnant, Elaine used to say that she could have popularized SCD much wider if she'd labeled it " The Fertility Diet. " It seems to set up ideal conditions for female SCDers to get pregnant. My niece has had two SCD babies. There have been many others on SCD to have had bouncing, healthy kids -- SCD is the absolute best start you can give your kids -- and you, as a Mom. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
Guest guest
Hi There Freeda Vitamins and GI probiotics make SCD legal products. I have been on SCD for 4 months and eating out is difficult but can be done. I usually look at menus and call and ask questions ahead of time rather than having to start from scratch with the waiter staff. That said I have found that eating out can still cause some problems. I have had CD for 32 years. When I started SCD iback in August t worked really well for the first month. Since then it has not been as effective. I stay mostly with intro to level 2 foods on the pecanbread list. Rearely ant raw fruit or salad. I am not sure if the SCD goat dripped yogurt was helping so I have stopped that for now. My Dr wants me to try Remicade but I want to keep going with SCD for a few more months and see if I can get back to a full remission that I have not had since July 2008. It sounds like you are in a remission period because of Remicade. From what I understand of Remicade it puts Crohns in remission but wares off after a number of weeks and you then need another infusion. My plan is to give SCD at least 2 years and even then I would never go back to eating most illegal foods. My advice would be not to try and introduce any illegal foods until you have been symptom and drug free for at least a year, remicade included. My interest in trying remicade is because since my relapse back to CD in 2008 I have lost 30lbs and I really need to put 20lbs back. Be Well. Yeah, the technical term for this is "two steps forward, one step back". <g> Most of us have experienced it at one point or another on SCD. My PCP refused to prescribe it because she didn't know anything about it other than what was in the formulary -- for 50 mg. (She asked me if I had a drinking problem.) I now have an appointment in January with a rheumatologist because of the muscle pain issues I've been having. I'll lay odds he won't prescribe LDN, either. He'll probably want to put me on anti-depressants and/or prednisone. Then I have an appointment with my oncologist.... LDN sounds great. Guest guest
Thanks, everyone, for your responses. I know I shouldn't be thinking about introducing illegals now, especially when I haven't even been 100%. I guess I just wondered why it seems like when other people eat illegals, their body tells them right away that it did not agree with them. I've heard this even from people who are on medication. However, I do think it's the Remicade that has put me into remission, and I want to go 100% on the diet so that I may possibly be able to go med free...but who knows. I guess what concerns me is, how will I know if the diet is working for me in case I make the decision to go off meds? It's hard for me, because I feel like I won't know as long as I am on meds and I'm scared to have my symptoms again. One other question- how do I know if my medications are legal. Or for example, I have to take folic acid that my doctor prescribed for me, because methotrexate interferes with folic acid. How do I know if my folic acid pills are SCD compliant? Guest guest
Hi Marilyn LDN is very easy to get even if you do not have a doctor. 4 members of my family are on it and we just get ourselves. Last week a petition was presented at the scottish parliament to do research into LDN. About 100,000 people are on it. I would say LDN is easier to get than dessicated thyroid which my family also needs. If you need information on where to get LDN from let me know. With your muscle pain I would check your thyroid here are some links that you might see yourself in http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/long-and-pathetic/ http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/temperature/ http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/tsh-why-its-useless/ Sky LDN sounds great. Guest guest
I've decided to order the 50mg pills from a Canadian pharmacy and make my own LDN. I'm a little nervous going at this on my own, but it shouldn't be any worse then doing Humira on my own (my old GI mysteriously went incommunicado as soon as I went on it). I'm not on steroids or pain pills, and have been off Humira since mid-September. Hopefully that means all will go well *knocks on wood*. I really wish I could find a good LDN FAQ though, because I haven't been able to find answers for some of my questions. I'm just encouraging it because in some cases even ones conventional doctor will prescribe it - as I said the other day, it took me a really long time to get around to asking my regular gastro - because I assumed the answer would be no. And then it wasn't. Mara
Guest guest
I thought I would add my 2 cents to all those new to the diet...I started the diet about 5 weeks ago and made the mistake of rushing into it!!! --breads and yogurt and cooked fruit were a disaster.....Then I started over about 4 weeks ago...and it is working....Here are some tips that have worked for me: 1) I eat: eggs, dcc, other legal cheeses, chicken, ground beef, a little butter, ripe bananas, honey, avocados and well cooked zuchinni....banana pancakes are my favorite!!! 2) there are a multitude of recipes on all these scd sites that will allow you to get creative w the above ingredients 2) my exhaustion was terrible...now, at the end of the 4th week my energy is coming back!! and I am off coffee, which was my addiction before I started the diet. 3) My bowels were a disaster for the first 3 weeks...they are now showing signs of slow but steady improvement and in the last 2 days...my bowels are beginning to be somewhat formed...yea! 4) Do not even think about illegals for a long time...trust me not only does this diet work (the science behind it is solid!) but it is a healthy diet!! 5) I am going to start introducing very well-cooked fruit next...and then maybe try the yogurt slowly, but there is no rush, bc the diet is well-rounded.... 6)I have the utmost confidence in the scd diet and the science behind it...if you read Elaine's book and you look around you at the eating habits of the masses...trust me you will be convinced to give this diet your all. It works!! -RZE > > > > Hi, > > > > I got diagnosed with Crohn's over the summer. As soon as I got my diagnosis, I started looking up info. on nutritional impact on Crohn's and came across the SCD. I have a few questions, if you don't mind me asking- > > > > 1. > > > > Thank you! > > >
