Guest guest
Hi All! My husband was helping me out by making some yogurt for a weekend trip we are taking. I asked him how much yogurt starter he put in. He said 1/2 cup, I thought he was kidding (because I told him to put in a 1/4 cup), we went back and forth on this for a little while. He claims he followed the directions in the book. We got the book out and to my surprise he was right! I have a Yogourmat and have been making it with 1/2 gallon milk & 1/4 cup Dannon yogurt and now realize it was supposed to be 1/2 cup!. So.......for months I have been making my yogurt with only half the starter that I was supposed to be using, I feel like such an idiot. So my question is.....does this mean that there has been lactose in the yogurt? I've felt fine (just a few issues....like C and some stomach pains over the past few months....but thought it was just part of the process). Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks, Holly O Crohn's 5/09 SCD 9/1/09 No meds-- Holly
Guest guest
Hi Holly, Don't worry! Anywhere from 1/4 to1/2 cup should be fine. I have read different SCD yogurt recipes with both quantities of starter. Your yogurt should still be okay. However, I do make it with half a cup. - > > Hi All! > > My husband was helping me out by making some yogurt for a weekend trip we > are taking. I asked him how much yogurt starter he put in. Guest guest
Hi all, you know something rang in about this post. I have BTVC Anniversary Tenth Edition 2004 and on page 157 at the bottom, it says to mix 1/2 c. of the cooled cream to 1/4 c. of legal commercial yogurt starter. So all this time since 2005, I've made it wrong also ;-). I never bought a new copy of the book whatever year it was because I was worried about changes from the original (not that there is--I just decided to keep the original copy I started with). Anyone have the latest version with corrections or the right amount of starter? I wonder if it would have been stronger (when I started, I could only eat maybe 1/8 t. every other day). And as I read further to the next page, it mentions the thermos type of yogurt makers aren't appropriate because it won't stay warm enough for 24 hours. Usually the bottom to half of the container is very thick and mid to top has to be dripped. Now I guess I'll shop for a different yogurt maker. Debbie 40 cd Thanks for any information.
