Guest guest
I've never heard of Kaiser approving the DS. Please let us know how your friend does... Thanks, heidi http://www.mywls.com/discus
Guest guest
Kaiser is fantastic for me! Once you get the referral to the surgeon, you are already approved!!! My doctor's actually approached me about it - I thought Kaiser would never pay for the surgery! I was floored and thrilled. My doctor told me that a couple of years ago she had to really fight for the surgery, but now Kaiser pays for it. Best of luck to your friend. I just found this great list and would like to introduce myself and answer this question about Kaiser Permanete. I had BPD done in Sept of 1997, paid for by insurance other than Kaiser. My pre-op weight was 307 lbs with a body mass index of 52.7. I now weigh 157 lbs, BMI = 26.9, and wear size 10/12 clothes. It was a long hard recovery, but I would do it again in a heartbeat. I also have Kaiser and have used it for most of my follow-up care. No one I know in Northern California, where I live, has gotten approval from Kaiser for BPD. Kaiser has a contract with a surgeon who does RnY in Redwood City for members who qualify for obesity surgery. It appears that qualification means a serious co-morbid condition, such as crippling back problems, complications of diabetes (but not just diabetic, go figure!) etc. The main glitch in follow-up usually is the relationship with your regular Kaiser physician. My doc and I had been together for 20 years. I trusted her and she trusted me. Whatever my surgeon recommended she did. When she left practice in January of this year, I was transferred to a new doc who just doesn't get that I know more about my needs than she does. I am now having to make the 600 mile commute to my surgeon for appropriate follow-up care. Deborah
Guest guest
Betsy, Did you get approved for the BPD/DS or the RNY surgery ? Guest guest
Hi Deborah, And welcome! You mean you had this surgery that many years ago and did not have this great support network? I am sorry to hear that! These people on this list are great, I don't know what I would have done without them when I was going through my surgery. What a great support system! I have met some really great friends here too! So what ever you can contribute with your experience or receive as support from us is all good! By the way I absolutely can empathize about the doc not realizing we know what we need for our bodies now they have been modified better than they. It is taboo for a mere lay person to know better than the almighty Doc you know! Take care> Vera- Lansdale,Pa Starting Bmi-61-11/00 Dr. Herron / Dr. Pomp assisting @ Mt. Guest guest
Cindy, I have a friend that has been going through the approval process with Kaiser since about February. She had to see a psychiatrist, and attend a nutrition class, then get the referral from her pcp. It is now caught up in limbo somewhere. I am not sure, but I think the only WLS Kaiser is doing right now is the RnY, either open or lap. Like I said, I'm not sure about it, but it's definitely worth checking into. Kim B. Guest guest
Betsy, That's great, at least in Colorado they won't even hear of a distal RNY let alone a BPD/DS. Where are you located ? Many people, including myself, end up switching from Kaiser due to them being inflexible about what type of surgery they offer.
