What are your thoughts on stevia? I read that it is illegal, but I also read

that you can use it in minimal amounts on this page:

http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/knowledge_base/kb/stevia.htm

I only like to sprinkle a tiny bit on my yogurt, but do you think that I need to

eliminate that use?

Also, my cooking spray has: grain alcohol and lecithin. Are those legal? I think

I'm just going to go out and buy one of those spray cans where you can just use

your own oil, but I wanted to know if it is safe for me to use this other spray.

Can I use Krill oil which has glycerin in it? Do you know of any cod liver oil

that is legal? The one that I have has soy in it, and a natural lemon lime

flavor, so I'm thinking that's probably illegal.

Sorry for all the questions. I want to do this right now that I'm finally ready

to fully commit. I'm sure I'll have a million more questions!

Thank you!

Amber

I read that article and I got the impression she didn't want anyone to use stevia.

I would buy a spray bottle and use your own oil.  Not sure if it's illegal but after going so long without using and trying to use it out of the can--it really made me sick plus I had to clean the oven.  It can't be good stuff (sorry to those who use PAM, etc.)

Glycerin is legal.

Carlson's. The lemon flavor has been checked out and is fine.

yeah, most likely.

We've all been there - don't worry about it. Better to ask then to find out 3

months later

that you were using the wrong thing.

That's smaller than minimal amounts. It'sprobably best to eliminate it at the beginning of the diet. You can use minimal amounts of honey or fruit to sweeten. I read that article and I got the impression she didn't want anyone to use stevia. Mara

Amber,

First of all, answering questions is what this group does best! If one

person doesn't have the answer, chances are, someone else does. All of us

research in different areas, and each of us has a slightly different

approach to things, so it's possible to make a synthesis of the

recommendations and find what works for you.

This is the thing which makes SCD so very powerful -- and at the same

time, confusing. There's no one set arrangement of foods -- we each find

what works for us. People want things laid out neatly: during the first

week, thou shalt eat... and in the second week, thou shalt eat....

except it doesn't work that way. What each of us tolerates, and how soon

we tolerate it depends on our individual systems.

You have to be VERY careful with stevia.

stevia * caution * (E/list) Stevia is an herb native to South America,

and is now grown and cultivated throughout the world. Stevia belongs to a

family called Terpenoids. According to The Organic Constitutents of

Higher Plants by Trevor , 2nd edition, page 158, “This class

of glycosides (terpenoids) often have physiological effects on mammals

and microorganisms.” Elaine has noted on the adult listserv that, “Its

molecular structure resembles a steroid. It is not SCD legal.” However,

on the SCD-Autism list, she indicated that it might be used in strictly

limited quantities for those children who absolutely cannot tolerate

either honey or saccharin.

Powdered stevia should be approached with

extreme caution. At least one manufacturer of organic stevia

includes “erythritol” which they claim is a “natural free flowing agent”.

Erythritol is what is called a sugar alcohol. Sugar alcohols include

things like mannitol, xylitol, and sorbitol which are used in a lot of

commercial “sugar-free” stuff. They're allowed to get away with that

because normally, our guts can't digest those sugar alcohols. But the bad

bugs in our guts can, and will have a field day on them.

If you elect to use stevia as a sweetener,

read all ingredient lists very carefully, and research all ingredients.

“All natural” or “organic” does not mean “SCD Legal.” If you are using

stevia, and do not appear to be gaining any ground on SCD, it would be

strongly recommended to eliminate the stevia for several weeks and keep a

food log.

Grain alcohol is grain which has been fermented (starch broken down) and

then distilled (all grain products except the alcohol removed) so it

would be legal.

Elaine did say that small amounts of lecithin were legal, though she

didn't know why anyone would want to use it if they could be eating good

egg yolks, and get their lecithin that way. The spray can is an

excellent idea.

Krill oil is a good source of Omega-3s. Although glycerin is not illegal,

you don't want to use too much of it, so if you can find a krill oil

without the glycerin, that would be better.

Be aware, though, that according to

http://altmedicine.about.com/od/herbsupplementguide/a/krilloil.htm,

" Side effects of krill oil may include loose stools, diarrhea or

indigestion. " You would have to find out what the " natural

lemon lime flavor " is. If, as in the case of the Carlson cod liver

oil and other oils, it's simply lemon and lime oils, it would be OK. You

are, however, right, that in general, the ingredient, " natural

flavors " means, " It ain't legal. "

You guys are the best! I sure didn't have to wait long for my answers. I'm so

thankful I found this group. It is such a blessing to have a support group for

something like this. I really appreciate all your advice. :)
