Guest guest
I'm curious about something. I'm on LDN. I've always been a real lightweight when it comes to alcohol. One glass of wine and I'm under the table. Friday night I was making brisket and added (legal) dry wine to the broth, and had a " taste " ...nothing. Drank another glass at dinner..nothing. Usually I would have been loopy after that. I know LDN blocks narcotic effect, but I've heard nothing about alcohol. Any thoughts? Guest guest
Hi PJ, The following was posted on the LDN/IBD Yahoo group this past week: ++++++++ This is from familydoctor.org (I'm sure you will find the same in other similar pages): Naltrexone blocks the parts of your brain that " feel " pleasure when you use alcohol and narcotics. When these areas of the brain are blocked, you feel less need to drink alcohol, and you can stop drinking more easily. Unlike disulfiram, another medicine that is sometimes used to treat alcoholism, naltrexone does not make you feel sick if you drink alcohol while taking it. http://familydoctor.org/online/famdocen/home/common/addictions/alcohol/130.html +++++++ Even in a very low dose naltrexone may be blocking the message usually sent to your brain that creates that sort of “buzz” you feel after drinking a glass of wine. Just to give you another perspective on this, another post about alcohol and LDN was: +++++++ In regard to alcohol consumption concurrent with taking LDN, Dr. Skip Lenz, a Florida pharmacist, has this to say: " One of the uses of LDN is to help alcoholics get off the juice. You should never use alcohol and LDN at the same time. Now, there will be folks who say they always have had a drink with no problems; on the other side of the coin, I know of several dozen cases where the patient has had projectile vomiting. " +++++++++++ I’ve seen posts from others that they had a small amount of alcohol while taking LDN with no ill effects. Some posted that their prescribing doctor advised no alcohol consumption while taking LDN, so there seems to be a wide variance of opinion on the question of alcohol consumption and LDN. Guest guest
Thanks, this is interesting. I had no bad effects. It was just so weird to feel " nothing " . Now I know for sure the LDN is working :)I probably won't drink from now on- don't want to feel sick. Guest guest
My GI symptoms are much improved, and I was referring to the fact that I am a lightweight when it comes to alcohol, and one drink did not touch me, so the LDN must be blocking the receptors.
