Hi all,

I haven't been responding much to e-mail as we are still away on vacation. My husband is a teacher so, after a miserable year health-wise with Asher, we just took off for a vacation and we are having a very good time. So, I'm sorry I've been "quiet" lately.

My question is: how have you helped your kids gain weight? Specifically, Asher is on a g-tube/mic-key button b/c he cannot take in enough orally (assumed to be b/c of such gastric dysmotility that he bloats, etc.) to help him grow. He was doing well on the tube before we left and is still having no problems with it but I'm fairly certain he's lost a pound or so. He's on Alimentum (easy to digest) and gets about 1200 ml (24 scoops of powdered Alimentum mixed in) a night (100mls an hour). I was giving him g-tube boluses of Pediasure during the day but he doesn't tolerate this well anymore ( he used to!) and now he throws up. He doesn't eat all day but will eat a fair amount (for him - 2 small, children sizes of pizza) in the evening. Any ideas? I've been so thrilled that he's started to eat a bit again that I hate to hook him up to the tube during his day nap b/c I'm afraid he won't eat orally at all. Other than the lost weight and a need for suppositories every 3 days to get him to poop, he's doing really really well.

Anne R - mom to Asher (mito - oxphos disease, complex III defect and possible complex I defect) and to Sam (primary immune deficiency)
