Message: 20 Date: Thu, 7 Jun 2001 09:40:19 -0700 Subject: RE: Website for Mexico and Gastric BandJust out of curiosity....Does anybody have any concerns with going to a foreign country to have any sort of surgery done? Hi Kirsten,

I confronted this issue personally earlier this year. when I went to Spain to have surgery with Dr. Baltasar.

I think it's just like having surgery done here: you have to research to determine which surgery you want and then investigate the particular surgeon you want to use as well.

I can tell you I couldn't be happier with my choice, would do it again in a hearatbeat, and would not hesitate to make the same recommendation to a child of mine, if I had one.

I think when you have people who act with integrity and compassion, no matter what country they are in the patient comes out a winner. Plus, I got to visit Spain, It doesn't get any better than that....

Of course, Dr. Baltasar is fluent in English, has done post-graduate work in New York, and has travelled extensively both in the US and elsewhere.

So, this made the decision a bit easier.

While I was at the clinica a Mexican surgeon came to study the DS with Dr. B. He was very nice, even more fluent in English that Dr. B and had a very nice attitude. I was kind of thinking that he saw the benefits of DS and went to Dr. B to learn because he recognized his expertise, which was also reassuring to me.

Please don't hesitate to ASK ME ANYTHING!!!!

Just for the record (although nobody has actually said anything) I certainly

didn't mean any offense to anybody by asking my question. It was merely a

question for information, not a slam on foreign countries. :)

Judith in Seattle,

Do you have any way of finding out who the Mexican surgeon is who

was studying with Dr. B? I live in Mexico and so far have not been

able to find anyone here who does the DS.

And for those concerned about surgery in a foreign country - well,

I chose to have my knee replacement surgery in Mexico rather

than at the Cleveland Clinic. Medical care here is first class, and

you are treated as an individual, not according to what the in-

surance companies want to pay for. Costs are cheaper (an

office visit with my PCP costs the equivalent of $12) and there

are many English speaking doctors.
