Guest guest
I was over at Kaiser South City last week and talked to Sasha Stiles (the medical director) about the stupidity of their stage 2 postop diet. See, for stage 3 (normal lifetime food) they tell us to avoid carbs: No pasta, rice, bread, beans, etc. etc. But stage 2 includes cream of wheat, cream of rice, saltine crackers, etc. And all the time I hear postops using stage 2 as an excuse to eat carbs. Stage 2 is just a very soft, full-liquid diet. There's nothing magical about cream of wheat. It contains NO PROTEIN or other nutritional value. Better for us to eat chicken baby food, beef baby food, etc. Of course, it doesn't taste as comforting and lovely as cream of wheat. Carbs turn to sugar in our mouths (thanks to the enzyme amylase, which is in our saliva). We'd much rather have the completely fattening empty calories of cream of wheat. But blended meat, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. would all be better for us than that crap. Sasha said she agrees. Maybe someday soon Kaiser change stage 2 and get rid of that confusing, contractictory recommendation. Martha
Guest guest
Martha I agree...I was taken back a little when they recommended Cream of Wheat (something I never had tried until now) and stuff like cream of mushroom?! It is very confusing. Thanks for bringing that up. azin > I was over at Kaiser South City last week and talked to Sasha Stiles > (the medical director) about the stupidity of their stage 2 postop diet. > See, for stage 3 (normal lifetime food) they tell us to avoid carbs: > No pasta, rice, bread, beans, etc. etc. > > But stage 2 includes cream of wheat, cream of rice, saltine crackers, > etc. And all the time I hear postops using stage 2 as an excuse to eat > carbs. > > Stage 2 is just a very soft, full-liquid diet. Guest guest
Martha, I also found it very very hard to make a serving of cream of wheat. I mean one to two ounces and that stuff is really yukie when it gets cold. Just my thoughts on that one. Pam Marsh --- " Azeeeeeeeeeeen!
