Guest guest
I am looking for help on finding the best and a SCD legal cod liver fish oil liquid and vitamin D (drops or tablet?)to take on the SCD. Does anyone know a good brand that is legal? Also my daughter is currently very anemic and we are looking for help on how to help her get her iron levels up and avoid a blood transfusion. Her hemaglobin is 9.8 (normal 16-20) and Hct 31 (normal 36-46) Has anyone had blood levels that low and have eaten some foods or took a natural iron supplement that is legal to help the numbers rise? Thanks so much for your help, Dene' daughter - crohn's SCD - 9 months Remicade
Guest guest
Has anyone had blood levels that low and have eaten some foods or took a natural iron supplement that is legal to help the numbers rise?I always had problems with anemia, and I was on iron pills forever, which were illegal, and never really worked for me. Then I started drinking green smoothies and my anemia went away. Green smoothies are too advanced for some to tolerate, but if your daughter can tolerate them it was a great natural way for me to raise my iron. Guest guest
What do you put in your green smoothies? Usually a banana, a few frozen strawberries, some virgin coconut oil (VCO), yogurt, and a few handfuls of raw spinach, kale, chard, or sometimes dandelion greens. Any fruit/green combination would work, but some greens are stronger than others =) Peace =)Alyssa 15 yoUC April 2008, dx Sept 2008SCD June 2009 (restarted)No meds! Guest guest
You asked about brands of cod liver oil & Vit. D. I use Carlson’s for both, D Drops is Vit. D3 in saponified coconut oil, 2000 IU/drop. I take 2-3 drops/day; cod liver oil (keep refrigerated) is 1000 mg/capsule. Since those are kept in the fridge, I take one when I remember to… Vitamin D3 is fat soluble (and is best absorbed with calcium so I take it with my daily dose of Calcium/Magnesium tablets along with the D3 drops). I was also very anemic but now am within normal ranges. If you have not done so already, have her doc test for B12 levels. I self inject once a month B12 serum – it has made a world of difference to me! I also cook in cast iron which sheds microscopic amounts of iron into whatever is being cooked in the pan. Hope your daughter is feeling better. Carol CD 21 yrs SCD 5 yrs B12 shots LDN cream (6 mo.) Guest guest
For iron, Alyssa suggested green smoothies. Those work really well but so do juices. I'm getting over a flare so I can't handle my beloved green smoothies right now but I'm fine with juicing fresh fruits and veggies. Juice is thought to absorb even better mineral absorption than the intact fruit or veggie because juicing liberates the minerals into a highly absorbable form. So I have this book: Complete Book of Juicing and it is awesome. One of the recipes is called " Iron Plus " and it says " this is an incredible drink, especially for women prone to anemia and low iron levels. " 1 beet with top, 2 kale leaves, 1/2 cup broccoli florets, 4 carrots, 1 apple (cut into wedges). It says there's about 5.5 mgs of iron in it (1812 potassium, 136.3 magnesium, 229 folic acid, 8552 RE Vit A, 97 mgs C and 8.7 mgs Vit E to name a few ) Kale and spinach are great for iron. Spinach actually has twice as much iron as most other greens. ....this book really is full of amazing information about fruits and veggies and I think all but maybe one or two recipes are SCD legal (jicama being one of those illegals..fortunately it isn't used often ) stacey > > I am looking for help on finding the best and a SCD legal cod liver fish oil liquid and vitamin D (drops or tablet?)to take on the SCD. Guest guest
I am a bit anemic now, too, and looking to do things naturally. One thing I had forgotten was beets. Undoubtedly because I don't like them. However, I remember from years ago when I was anemic that beets do not have a lot of iron in them but what they do have is particularly easy to assimilate. So, DH just left for the grocery store with beets on the list. I will put them into my soup and turn it into borscht! I will eat more liver, too, and that I really don't like! But I'd rather do this than pills if I can. I am looking for help on finding the best and a SCD legal cod liver fish oil liquid and vitamin D (drops or tablet?)to take on the SCD. Guest guest
I don't like taking pills either, but I did take repliva for my anemia which didn't seem to bother my digestive system like some other iron pills do. Do you mean Repliva didn't cause D or C? I wouldn't mind taking something to hurry things up if it can be gut neutral!
Guest guest
I use Green Pasture's Blue Ice Cod Liver Oil. It's supposed to be one of the better ones (something about having natural vitamin A instead of synthetic in it). For vitamin D, I use Healthy Origins. I used to get iron infusions (Venofer) when I was really anemic.
