Guest guest
I was wondering what steps I should take to get myself ready for the orientation. I have been told that I should start losing weight now so that when I did get weighed in, I won't have so much more to lose once my weight has been charted. Were there any guidlines as to what protein to take and what is best for pre-op vs. post op? Should I wait to start the protein or should I start now? Is there anyone who is going through the same steps as I am at this moment? I have read many of your posts but still feel a bit confused as to what to buy and how to get prepared. Thank you all for your support. Confused, Maridiana Approved 7/22/05 Orientation 10/18//

Guest guest
Welcome to the journey! At your K-SSF orientation (I remember mine like it was yesterday, even though it's coming up on three years now.) you'll be given a binder (the Bari-bible) which contains everythig you ever wanted to know about preparing for, having, and recovering from gastric bypass surgery. Your eyes will probably glaze over (as mine did) at the sheer volume of stuff you'll be bombarded with. That's OK. That's why they have monthly pre-op classes. No one gets it all the first time. It takes practice. In addition to your orientation, you'll also be scheduled for an appointment with their dietician, psychologist, and your surgeon. (Some folks have some or all of these before orientation, depending on how the scheduling of appointments goes.) You'll be introduced to the famous 1200 calorie pre-op meal plan. It's what I (and most) use to lose their 10%. It doesn't seem like much (I used to have 1200 SNACKS, for God's sake!) but it works. The dietician can help you tailor it to your specific needs. You may only need protein supplements for the first few weeks POST-op, while your system heals and you build up to eating your protein again. Protein (plus the whole wonderful world of suppliments) will be covered in your classes. Relax. Breathe. You are embarking on a wonderful and exciting journey. It's going to change you in ways you can't even imagine today. Tim -240 > I was wondering what steps I should take to get myself ready for the > orientation. Guest guest
Wow! Thank you! It does seem like a lot but I am so very ready to take on this journey and start a new life. I am glad that there is a lot of information that is given just because I do have a friend who had this surgery done (at another location/not Kaiser) and she did not have any of the support that is given here or with Kaiser. Thank you for the information. Guest guest
Which facility will be doing your surgery? If It's Richmond, do NOT start losing the 10% until after your orientation appointment, or it won't count. maridianas wrote: >I was wondering what steps I should take to get myself ready for the >orientation. Guest guest
maridianas, Where is your orientation. I am from the Fremont program and if you are going there and your high weight has been charted go ahead and start losing. If you are from Richmond, or SSF ask someone from that program. Good luck. Guest guest
Kristie, Congrats on the earlier date. I know what you are feeling, but just know that everything will be just fine. I am very happy with my whole experience with the Fremont program. Everyone was so kind and helpfull, from the surgery staff down to the maint. staff. It was a real positive experience. They will make you feel comfortable and relaxed. You will do fine. What time was your pre-op yesterday? I was there for my 3 week checkup at 3:00 pm. I may have seen you and not known it. I will be sending prayers up for you on Monday. Cheri (BTW Enjoy your fleet enema tomorrow. LOL)hollotwomn@... wrote: maridianas,Where is your orientation. Guest guest
Cheri, I am sure we saw each other or maybe you talked to my friend. My appt. was at 2:30 I was there at 1:30 and running around throughout there until 4:00 and then off to my ekg, lab, & pharmacy. I was wearing denim capris, white shirt, have blonde hair, and black glasses. My friend was wearing capris or jeans (denim) and a green shirt, she also has blondish brown hair. She was in the second room by herself for awhile and then in the first room. Which room were you in? What were you wearing ? I'm dreading the fleet. That bottle looks huge. Think I am going to get like diet snapple and chug with that. Guest guest
Does that mean that if you're going to go through SSF you CAN start losing the 10% earlier? Does SSF count from the highest pre-op weight? I was just weight last week for a GYN appt. and came in at 346; I'd really like to start working on dropping NOW rather than waiting till I'm finally seen for orientation, which may not be for several months - but if I can drop 35 lbs I don't want them to make my pre-op goal even lower! Guest guest
Thanks, Colleen - that's not what I wanted to hear, but it's what I needed to know! Guest guest
Cathy, Did you want to not lose more than your 10%? In my opinion, it would be better, lose more than the 10% anyway, so it is a good idea to start ASAP. I lost more than the 10% pre-op and it just makes your recovery better, the surgery itself easier for the surgeon and you will start to feel better about yourself that much sooner. It also made me confident that my surgery wouldn't be cancelled because I was 1/2 a lb over goal. There is enough to worry about without having to think about that too! Plus, I was told by my surgeon, if I had only lost the 10%, I would have still had to have open procedure instead of lap. I wanted lap, so that was my drive to lose the extra weight. Just wanted to give you a different perspective.... Good luck! Kay 336/290/224/? 6/28/05- surgery Dr Baggs- First day of the rest of my life! > > > Which facility will be doing your surgery? Guest guest
It's not that I don't WANT to lose more than the 10% - I devoutly hope that I'll lose closer to 15%! What I'm worried about is not being ABLE to lose the full 35 lbs. and getting stalled partway, or losing perhaps 10 lbs " early " and then only losing 30 lbs after orientation - which would put me over 10% (since I'm now just under 350) but wouldn't meet the guidelines for scheduling surgery. Does that clear things up? Cathy > > > > Which facility will be doing your surgery? Guest guest
Cathy, just don't lose anything then when you weigh in at orientation, that's when you go for it with all you got do the 10% or more. I was suppose to lose 27 pounds, and I pushed myself to no end and lost 42 and my surgery went really well. I almost died in a surgery before so if you do more than 10% your only helping things along. Just don't start until weigh in at orientation. Good Luck DonnaCathy wrote: It's not that I don't WANT to lose more than the 10% - I devoutly hope that I'll lose closer to 15%! Guest guest
Thanks, Donna - That's closer to what I was hoping to hear. I'm already trying to cut out some of my bad habits, even though I'm not actually trying to lose - like nibbling. But I may start trying to lose in earnest once I get my orientation date.
