My plastic surgeon, Bermudez MD, will be our guest at the Kaiser Oakland Support Group this Wednesday. The meeting takes place at 7:00 PM at Kaiser Oakland (corner of MacArthur and Howe) on the 12th floor of the hospital building in the conference room. Signs will be posted in the lobby and near main elevators guiding you to the meeting.Dr. Bermudez specializes in care of WLS patients. He did my belt lipectomy. Last year he did a presentation at the meeting with Before and After slides and answered everyone's questions. If you need directions to the hospital, contact me.Martha Silverspring

Martha,

Question...If Kaiser doesn't cover plastics unless for severe medical

reasons, why would they allow a plastic surgery surgeon speak during a

support meeting? Seams like dangling a carrot in the face of a horse

so to speak. On the other hand I guess it is good to know that

plastics can improve your look if you are willing to pay out of pocket

for it.

You're right Jeanne, that Kaiser only covers the cost of medically

necessary reconstructive surgery (as opposed to elective " cosmetic "

surgery). Mine doesn't, but some Kaiser plastic surgeons do

perform " fee-for-service " procedures.

Kaiser patients have every right to research their reconstructive

surgery options, whether that's inside or outside the Kaiser

system. Dr. Bermudez (who is in private practice) is the premier

Belt Lipectomy surgeon, in the Bay Area.

I invited Dr. Bermudez to speak because lots of people have questions

about plastic surgery: What are my options? What does a particular

surgery involve? How will I look afterward? He addresses these issues.

Kaiser covers only medically-necessary plastic surgery--usually

abdominal surgeries and breast reduction. It's very hard to get Kaiser

to do arms, thighs, butt, and other areas. And in my opinion, I think

sometimes their approach is more " let's take it off and get on to the

next surgery " and less " let's take time to make it lovely " .

I wanted a belt lipectomy, which removes excess skin and tightens

everything 360 degrees all around the body--belly, butt, back flaps.

After extensive research I had it done by Dr. B. (11/04/04) and I am

very pleased with the results.

Anyone who has questions about plastic surgery can come to the meeting

and check it out.

BTW, this isn't the only Kaiser meeting to have a presentation by a

private plastic surgeon: The Vallejo meeting has had Dr. Zimmerman in

the past.
