Guest guest
Can I ride this out on my own or do I start calling my surgeon again? I have worked for an MD for 17 years and we tell all patients, if anything is bothering you enough to question yourself, pick up the phone and call the doctor. Better to be safe then sorry. Guest guest
I had thought this was past, but apparently not.. I can't seem to keep anything down except water (& maybe bullion...afraid to try it just yet) since last night. I even tried boost w/extra protein, but even that comes up. Protein drinks are not working.. puree isn't working.. and I don't get nauseous at all.. I just get this knotty pain under my breastbone for 30minutes to an hour before I get the hot spit thing & throw up. I'm hoping I just need to rest my stomach by eating & drinking nothing but sips of water, but I'm paranoid, especially with the flooding going on. I've also started a very low grade fever (for me- normal temp is 97.7) of 99.2. Can I ride this out on my own or do I start calling my surgeon again? This just sucks.. the wierdest part is, I feel pretty good if my stomach is empty.. Hugs, Liane postop 5/30/01 Dr Warden
Guest guest
Liane, You really need to call your surgeon. Sounds like more then your tumy being upset.. Guest guest
Starting calling NOW! It doesn't take long to become dehydrated and end up in the ER. Peace, TJ Can I ride this out on my own or do I start calling my surgeon again? > Hugs, > Liane > postop 5/30/01 > Dr Warden

Maybe you could add some low-acid fruit juice to the water--diluted juice. That way, you'll get some natural sugars in you for strength. Don't worry about the carbs at this point. Also, you don't want to lose your electrolytes, so if you can try a sports drink like Gatorade, even a little bit, that would help. >I even tried boost w/extra protein, but even Stay away from that stuff. Protein drinks or shakes are probably much too much for you to keep down now. >that comes up. Protein drinks are not working.. puree isn't working.. >and I don't get nauseous at all.. Are you on a proton pump (acid) inhibitor like Prilosec or Prevacid (dosage is one or two capsules per day, and not hard to swallow)? If not, please consider calling your doc ASAP and asking for it. Also, try to suck on a Tums or two or three before that hot spit comes up. If it is acid reflux, you could burn your esophagus. I had this on Day 2 after surgery. Luckily, I had taken my Prilosec to the hospital with me, and my DW went out and got me some Tums. But, please check with your doctor if you are not already on these meds. > >I'm hoping I just need to rest my stomach by eating & drinking nothing >but sips of water, Yes, keep up the water, but try to get some other calories in, too. Would it help to squeeze a few drops of lemon juice to flavor the water a bit? >but I'm paranoid, especially with the flooding going on. Ohhh, what a terrible time for you to be less than two weeks post-op! >I've also started a very low grade fever (for me- normal >temp is 97.7) of 99.2. Can I ride this out on my own or do I start >calling my surgeon again? I think you can ride out the low grade fever. I came home from the hospital with one, and it flared up again into a bad head cold about two weeks later. It is not uncommon to come home from the hospital with a fever. And, your immune system has been compromised by the surgery. So, all the more reason to get fluids AND calories into yourself. What is of greater concern, I think, is the " hot spit. " I think that is even better reason to call the doc ASAP. Please get well, soon. Best, Steve P.S., there is a DSPostOp_Problems list. It is for urgencies like yours. You might want to join the list. I am taking the liberty of cross-posting this reply to that list in case its readers might be able to offer you more expert suggestions than mine. > >This just sucks.. the wierdest part is, I feel pretty good if my >stomach is empty.. >Hugs, >Liane >postop 5/30/01 >Dr Warden > > >---------------------------------------------------------------------- >
