Unfortunate Pecan Incident

I just came back from a very crampy, very bloody BM. Ugh. I remember I

made a new batch of pecan butter using different pecans yesterday, the

only new thing that I ate. The pecans were from Teeter, and

simply said " pecans " on the label. Not raw, not roasted, not salted,

nothing. Just, " pecans. " Well, my colon begs to differ. I look back at

my food diary: 9:30 pm - pecan butter. When did the bloody BM occur?

Almost exactly 24 hours later, which appears to be my transit time.

I'm guessing the " pecans " were roasted and coated in flour, because

now that I think of it, the pecan butter did taste a bit different.

Another interesting tidbit: today, for the first time in weeks, I

experienced a very pronounced craving for chocolate. I now attribute

this to the bad bugs getting some flour for dinner last night and

wanting more of the 'good stuff.'

On the upside, all this adds up to the almost unarguable fact that the

pecans had flour added that was not on the label, and that this

unlisted ingredient gave me a reaction. This sort of makes me happy

because now I have proof that manufacturers CAN and DO add stuff that

they don't list, and that this DOES affect me. I've told all that to

my mom, but she didn't believe me or take me seriously. So there,

proof =)

On the downside, the 24 hour transit time was enough for me to have

three heaping spoonfuls of pecan butter as an alternative 'treat' when

I was craving chocolate. And my friends and I were going to go to the

movies/mall tomorrow. Ugh. My poor bowels =( I think I may do a

vitamin E enema now and in the morning to head things off as best I can.

Anyways, to all you newbies, take this as a warning! Don't eat any

pecans that just say " pecans. "

Peace =)

Well you could feed them cocoa butter, that takes care of

the chocolate craving.

There's a 2% law so any food can have 2% of 'anything' not listed.

I bought cashews at Walgreens one time that said cashews, salt.  Made me soo sick.  Try to stick with a trusted source if you can.

Have fun today!

I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience.

I buy the Teeter pecans frequently (for the past 2 years) and haven't had

any problems. They're definitely not roasted.

Hope you feel better soon.

I buy the Teeter pecans frequently (for the past 2 years) and haven't had any problems. They're definitely not roasted. Hm, that's weird. Maybe I'm just more sensitive to whatever was on them. I'm glad you haven't had any problems though! I guess that's just another example of how everyone's different =) Peace =)Alyssa 15 yoUC April 2008, dx Sept 2008SCD June 2009 (restarted)No meds!

I stand corrected! I buy the chopped pecans (green bag from Teeter).

The ingredients read pecans. However, beneath that are the following two

statements:

Contains: pecans (in large text)

May contain: peanunts, cashews, almonds, brazil nuts, hazelnuts, pistachios,

macadamia nuts, walnuts, coconut, soy, milk, wheat

Yipes!

I had never carefully read the " may contain " statement, because I assumed it had

the usual disclaimer about being manufactured in a plant that also produces tree

nuts, etc. The soy, milk, and wheat references are truly disturbing. I wonder

whether this is what made it into the batch you bought?

I won't be buying these pecans any longer.

I wonder whether this is what made it into the batch you bought?Maybe so! The ones I bought weren't in a green bag, they just said "pecan halves" and were in a styrofoam black tray wrapped in plastic wrap in the produce section of the store. But I wonder if it had the same disclaimer at the bottom that I didn't read... Peace =)Alyssa 15 yoUC April 2008, dx Sept 2008SCD June 2009 (restarted)No meds!

I've used the same ones from Teeter. They don't taste processed or

anything different. Maybe you had a bad batch?

Hope you feel better now.

I've used the same ones from Teeter. They don't taste processed or anything different. Maybe you had a bad batch?Maybe so. I would question whether is really was the pecans except that the reaction was so severe and the timing was so perfect. Actually Trader Joes has cheaper ones if you are near one. I don't have one near

me.

Actually, the rule says anything under 2% doesn't have to be listed in descending order but does have to be listed. Ron

There's a 2% law so any food can have 2% of 'anything' not listed.

Have fun today!

How long has the 2% law been changed?  I have noticed the new gluten-free.

OT--has anyone seen pineapple 'in it's own juices' lately?  I can only find 'in pineapple juice' lately.
