Guest guest
Hello all, I was just curious as to what is in the so called Mito coctail? And do you need a Mito doc to prescribe this or is this something that your PCP or GI doc can do. I had heard that it was a mixture of vitamins and such, just curious.. thanks for any help Missy mom to jeremy 13 with mito www.caringbridge.org/co/jeremy
Guest guest
Missy- My mito cocktail consists of IV Carnitine, CoQ10, and Cerefolin. The Cerefolin has several B vitamin's as well as Folic Acid. I'm having Glutathione levels measured now and then will most likely go on IV regiment for that too. Everybody is on a little bit different cocktail I've found. My mito doc. prescribes mine. Guest guest
Go to the UMDF webpage. Dr. Cohen has then listed in three tiers. Most do not require a prescription. The CoQ10 and alpha lipoic acid are expensive. Guest guest
Dear Missy, I believe every cocktail is designed specifically for the form of mito. If the mutation is known, that helps a lot too. My 7 year old , Leanna takes the following; coQ10, L-Carnitine, B-50 complex, Arginine liquid and a multivitamin. It was prescribed by her genetics/ metabolic doctor that she sees for her mito. She takes it in doses specific for her weight. All are over the counter except Arginine, which is compounded into a liquid form from the pharmacy. She actually could take Arginine in pill form over the counter, but her amount would equal 12 pills a day. Way too much for a child to swallow. She swallows the others. The liquid is made in a very concentrated dose. Make sure, you do not take them without the specific instructions of a mito doctor with exact doses according to weight. Guest guest
As Suhad said, each Mito person takes different things. At this point my 4 year old daughter, Asenath, takes: Carnitor COQ10 Vit. B2 Vit. E Polycitra (for Metabolic acidosis) Aspirin (to thin her blood for her CNS Vasculitis) Topamax (seizure med) Analipril Maleate (high blood pressure med) Prednisolone (for CNS Vasculitis; a steroid) Zantac (to protect her tummy due to all the meds and her vomiting) My other daughter, Zipporrah (9 months) only takes Carnitor and COQ10 thus far. Your doctor should be the one to decide what your child needs to take based on your individual bloodwork and Mito condition. Hope this helps some. Guest guest
You can get the Rx Carnitine at your local pharm. It's Sigma Tau brand. I would reccomend ordering the liquid CoQ10 from Tischon. It's a very reputable brand that many people on the list use. They give a discount to Cleveland Clinic patients. Guest guest
HI Amy. Ask your doctor for a prescription for Carnitor. It's prescription carnitine and the best you can find. (It's made by Sigma Tau) Your insurance should cover it as it's only available by script. As far as the liquid CoQ10, go to the following website: www.epic4health.com. They have liquid CoQ10 from Tischon. It also is supposed to be the best. Insurance may pay for it as it has an NDC# but, some do not. Good luck!
